RCH has cared for the children and young people of Victoria for more than 150 years since it was founded in 1870. A full range of paediatrics and adolescent health services are provided plus tertiary and quaternary care for the most critically ill and medically complex patients in Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW and other states around Australia and overseas. The Hospital has more than 6,000 staff, a budget of $850M, 12 wards and 350 beds. Annually, the RCH has 300,000+ Specialist Clinic appointments, 90,000+ Emergency Department presentations and 20,000 elective surgeries.

Paediatric Training

The Victorian Basic Paediatric Training Consortium (VBPTC) oversees basic paediatric training across a network of two primary training programs based at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) and Monash Children’s Hospital (MCH), and a total of eighteen outer metropolitan, regional and rural adjunct training program sites.  Trainees will be exposed to a full range of clinical services provided in the care of children and their families.    

In order to become a Basic Paediatric Trainee (BPT) with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), trainees must first secure an accredited position. Trainees can potentially enter BPT as either a:  

  • Junior Resident Medical Officer (JRMO);
  • Senior Resident Medical officer (SRMO); or
  • Registrar  

In the Registrar year, recruitment for entry into basic paediatric training occurs through the RCH in coordination with the VBPTC. This includes trainees from interstate or New Zealand who are already basic trainees but wish to continue their basic training in Victoria.   

The Positions

Applications are now open for 2025 Registrar positions for eligible candidates applying to enter the Basic Paediatric Training program. This includes trainees from interstate or New Zealand who are already basic trainees but wish to continue their basic training in the VBPTC. Successful applicants will be employed by RCH and may work on rotation in positions at RCH or other accredited adjunct training locations on secondment. The secondment sites on the registrar roster include: Austin Hospital; Ballarat Base Hospital; Box Hill Hospital; Casey Hospital; Frankston Hospital; University Hospital Geelong; The Northern Hospital; Joan Kirner Women’s & Children’s Hospital; Sunshine Hospital Paediatric Emergency Department; and Monash Children’s Hospital.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for a 2025 Registrar position you must; 

  • demonstrate at least 24 months of paediatric experience, including at least 6 months of neonatology (note: no more than 12 months of neonatology will be considered in the 24 months of experience required); and  
  • be eligible for GENERAL medical registration in Australia by February 2025.  

RCH recognises that having culturally competent Paediatricians improves the health of all children in our community, and also contributes in a positive way to the healthcare outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and their families. RCH is committed to employing Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander doctor/s to enter the Basic Paediatric Physician Training Program at BPT1 level. The aim of the program will be to nurture and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors to be trained as Paediatricians.
