Job description

The Curatorial and Accessioning team (CAT) is looking for a full time Assistant Curator for our Cultural Connections Team.

The National Film and Sound Archive’s (NFSA) purpose is to tell the national story in all its rich diversity by collecting, preserving, and sharing audiovisual media, through the creativity and history represented in film, television, radio, recorded sound, augmented reality, online, videogames and associated contextual documentation and ephemera.

The NFSA is the custodian of Australia’s analogue and born digital national audiovisual collection which contains over 4 million items. Our primary focus is on Australian production and Australian related production, but we also address key international influences on our culture.

Cultural Connections Team
Focussed on telling the national story through flagship programs such as NFSA Restores and Sounds of Australia as well as building external relationships with film festivals, national collecting institutions, FIAF, DFAT and other cultural organisations. The team will work with other areas of the agency to achieve positive public and industry facing outcomes.

Job Details

Under general direction, and in collaboration with the team, undertake the following duties:

  • Coordinate and oversee tasks related to digitisation and conservation requirements to meet project deadlines in collaboration with relevant teams whilst providing curatorial rigour.
  • Assist with project planning, content development, writing, research, and delivery of content from the national collection, that represents and tells the National story.
  • Oversee collection activities relevant to projects, including accessioning and acquisition activities, when necessary, and develop and build and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  • Contribute to the interpretation and presentation of the collection as required and assist with ad-hoc requests from the industries, including FIAF and affiliated archives.

Selection Criteria

In relation to the ‘Job Details’ and the team outlines listed above, concisely outline your skills, experience, and achievements against each of the following areas:

  1. Demonstrated skills and experience working in, and knowledge of, Australia’s audiovisual industries and/or collections that complement the delivery of projects
  2. Proven knowledge and experience of working with audiovisual media and/or collections, including technical and practical skills in both analogue and digital material and associated physical workflows, software applications and digital delivery platforms.
  3. Highly developed organisational skills, including demonstrated experience in coordinating multiple projects, meeting deadlines and/or project coordination experience.
  4. Well-developed negotiation and influencing skills and demonstrated ability to liaise and communicate concisely and effectively, written and verbal, with team members, senior management, external stakeholders, and general audiences.
Desired Skills and Experience
  • A relevant tertiary degree and/or equivalent experience in a related cultural or audiovisual industry environment.
