Job description

Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council (GLALC)’s main objective, for each of our Members, is to improve and protect their social and emotional wellbeing by creating a meaningful connection between us based on mutual respect and understanding. We provide a range of services, regular open communication, public meetings, information sharing and a culturally safe place for our Members to come together to yarn, connect and feel they belong.

About Gandangara Health Service (GHS)

Gandangara Health Services Ltd (GHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service Organisation (ACCHO) serving the South-Western Sydney community. Operating under GLALC, GHS provides a variety of cultural, clinical, and allied primary health services that are grounded in cultural protocols and co-created with the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people we serve.

The Opportunity

The Peer Worker at Gandangara Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Hub is central to providing culturally sensitive, holistic, and trauma-informed support to First Peoples facing health-related substance issues. By working closely with individuals who share lived experience, community members, and various stakeholders, this role is dedicated to empowering participants through their unique recovery journeys, enhancing community awareness, and contributing to evidence-based research in the field.

The Peer Worker aims to significantly improve the overall quality of life and well-being of those they support. The design and delivery of services are deeply informed by the real-world experiences of individuals recovering from AOD issues, ensuring the provided support is both relevant and effective.

The ideal candidate will have a personal understanding of the challenges and successes associated with recovery from health-related substance issues, particularly within First Peoples communities. Your role will be pivotal in connecting with participants, sharing your lived experience to empower them on their recovery journeys, and enhancing the overall well-being and quality of life for those you support.

You will bring a deep respect for and understanding of cultural heritage, leveraging the strengths and connections of participants to their family, culture, and country. Your work will be informed by your own recovery journey, allowing you to provide support that is not only empathetic but also highly relevant and effective.
