About SSEN:BE
SSEN:BE is part of the network of specialist schools that operates under the Statewide Services pillar of Service Delivery. SSEN:BE provides educational support and services with schools for students who present with extreme, complex and challenging behaviours across a K-12 context. A continuum of consultative support with schools for students is delivered through Engagement Centres and the Midland Learning Academy. The services of Engagement Centres and the Academy are coordinated through SSEN:BE which provides the administrative structure that oversees and manages these services as a Statewide model of supports for schools, teachers and students. The services complement other teams working in networks, regions and schools, supporting a greater number of students across the state. Support is available across the public school system.
Engagement Centres coordinate the K-12 provision of the following three services:
- Professional learning to improve student engagement and behaviour
- Consultative support for schools needing additional assistance with planning for those students with very complex needs
- Direct and indirect support for individual students exhibiting the most extreme, challenging and complex needs.
The successful applicant will be required to travel to schools within the Kimberley region to provide support. It may also involve travel across our school. The successful applicant will also be required to attend associated training and school development days at our main school site which operates out of Statewide Services Centre in Padbury. This travel may involve overnight stays. Applicants will need to hold and maintain a current WA drivers' licence for the duration of the role.
About the role
The Aboriginal Youth Support Coordinator will work within the Young Offender's Act and the Children and Community Services Act. The successful applicant will connect young people to appropriate youth and counselling services, as well as maintain an effective network of youth, employment, education and training services relevant to young people in the locality.
The successful applicant will be responsible for, in collaboration with other agencies, the research, development, implementation and monitoring of plans for young people transitioning from a detention setting. You will monitor administrative systems and processes for students across the SSEN: BE, as well as monitoring systems and databases to identify any opportunities for improvement. The successful applicant may provide collaboration, information and consultancy to other SSEN:BE staff to inform planning and supports for students they are supporting.
The successful applicant will ideally have previous experience in a similar position in providing support and advice to students. As Aboriginal Youth Support Coordinator you should prioritise positive relationships between students, staff, agencies and families. You should display a sound understanding of the case management of students that includes knowledge of Aboriginal social and emotional wellbeing, trauma-informed practice and effective intervention, monitoring and reporting strategies. You should also have an understanding of the Departments Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework and its application in a school context.
The successful applicant should have excellent written communication skills to support the information and preparation of briefing notes and correspondence, as well as strong interpersonal skills to build effective working relationships, and liaise with a wide range of individuals across multiple sites state-wide.
The community
The Kimberley region - spread over Australia's entire north-western corner - is one of the world's last wilderness frontiers. Here you'll find prolific wildlife, majestic canyons, freshwater swimming holes and several outback stations, as well as one of Australia's greatest 4WD road trips. Despite the area's remoteness, it's also a place of great food, luxury accommodation, friendly locals and one of the most romantic beach towns on Earth.
