Ready to kickstart your career in heavy vehicle spray painting?

We have an exciting opportunity for someone to begin an apprenticeship as an Automotive Spray Painter or a current Apprentice Spray Painter to join the team at Wales Bus Repairs in Smithfield.

Reporting to the Production Manager, you will be responsible for learning and assisting in the preparation and painting of buses.

You will work under the supervision of experienced painters, and your primary responsibilities will include sanding, masking, and preparing surfaces for painting, mixing and applying paint to vehicles, and maintaining painting equipment and tools.

What you will learn:

As an Apprentice Spray Painter at Wales Bus Repairs, you will learn:

  1. Surface Preparation: Cleaning, sanding, and masking vehicle surfaces to ensure proper adhesion of paint and create a smooth canvas for the painting process.
  2. Colour Matching: Mixing and matching paint colours to accurately match the vehicle's original finish or achieve the desired colour according to specifications.
  3. Paint Application: Using spray guns and other equipment to apply paint evenly and smoothly onto vehicle surfaces, ensuring consistent coverage and a flawless finish.
  4. Priming and Sealing: Applying primers and sealers to promote paint adhesion, prevent rust, and create a solid foundation for the topcoat.
  5. Paint Layering: Applying multiple layers of paint, including basecoat, clearcoat, and other specialized coatings, to achieve the desired colour, depth, and glossiness.
  6. Blending and Fading: Skilfully blending new paint into existing areas, fading the edges to achieve a seamless transition and uniform appearance.
  7. Detailing and Touch-Ups: Performing detailed touch-ups to correct imperfections, blemishes, or inconsistencies in the paint job.
  8. Texture and Effects: Creating special textures, patterns, or effects using techniques such as metallic or pearlescent finishes.
  9. Curing and Drying: Monitoring and controlling drying and curing processes, which may involve the use of heat lamps or other equipment.
  10. Quality Control: Inspecting painted surfaces for flaws, runs, or other defects, and performing necessary adjustments or corrections.
  11. Safety Compliance: Adhering to safety protocols, using proper ventilation, protective gear, and ensuring a safe working environment for oneself and others.
Does this sound like you?
  • Willingness to learn and take direction: You will need to follow instructions from experienced staff and be open to learning new techniques and skills
  • Strong work ethic and reliability: We are looking for someone who will be punctual, dependable, and willing to work hard
