The Department

Over the years, SBS has grown into one of the most unique and linguistically diverse multicultural broadcasters in the world today. Delivering SBS Charter-focused and community relevant, news, current affairs, information, entertainment and music, our services are available on radio, online, via digital television and social media, as well as offering a variety of podcasts. Servicing 60+ languages, SBS Radio and audio services are dedicated to the nearly five million Australians who speak a language other than English at home. 

To further deliver on our purpose and Charter, we have launched SBS-produced television news bulletins in Arabic. These bulletins are delivered Monday-Friday and focus on Australian news, particularly reflecting the perspectives of Arabic-speaking communities in Australia. The services also include national and international coverage of events and issues of particular interest and relevance to these communities.  

The Role 

We’re looking for a Supervising & Planning Producer, reporting to the Executive Producer of SBS Arabic TV News bulletin. 

The Arabic TV News Bulletin runs Monday to Friday and is part of our News and Current Affairs department.

This senior role will be responsible for supervising content, consistency, quality, legal compliance, workflows and timely technical delivery of Arabic News bulletin, supervise vision, scripts, GFX, appropriate supers, intros and request changes where needed.

About you 

We are looking for people who come equipped with: 

  • Language - Proficiency in written and spoken English and broadcast standard Arabic is essential. Candidates will be required to undergo a language assessment to demonstrate their proficiency in Arabic.
  • Journalism - Demonstrated experience in professional journalism.
  • Managing pressure - Proven ability to work under pressure, meeting strict timelines.
  • Broadcast experience - Experience Supervising and subediting TV content, including supervising vision, scripts, GFX, appropriate supers, intros.
  • News and context - Understanding of national and international news and capacity to contextualise every day news.
  • Legal framework - Understanding of Australia's legal framework and Media Law.
  • Planning - Strong short and long term planning skills and coordination within the team and with the rest of the organisation. 
  • Coaching - Ability to coach the team (eg. voice delivery and writing to pictures)
  • Indigenous content - Understanding of the importance of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures in SBS Charter and be genuinely interested in learning more, to assist deliver relevant and unique First Nations content to Arabic speaking audiences.
  • Platforms -  Experience in providing content across all news platforms is an advantage. Understanding the craft of video editing is highly valued.
  • Community - Understanding of the diversity within the Arabic-speaking community in Australia is important. 
  • Systems - Demonstrated computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Word, email and digital media editing/production software. 
  • Stakeholders - Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a range of stakeholders internally and externally.  
  • Candidates should be able to legally work in Australia.
