Mission Data (MD) Division within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is responsible for providing the foundational data capabilities to support all of ASD’s functions. We do this via the provision of data platforms and services, management of ASD’s mission data, and providing complex analytic development and support, including Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities. All roles within MD require extensive knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policies requirements.
The Service Reliability Enablement (SRE) in MD Division develops and facilitates the implementation of solutions to functions that support mission areas in conflict or crisis scenarios.
The Reliability Engineering Support (RES) Team within SRE Section is looking for a highly motivated Site Reliability Engineer able to be part of an expanding team spread across multiple locations. You will work closely with Technical Leads and Team Leads across the Section to deliver critical capability for MD Division and its customers. The RES team is responsible for ensuring mission requirements for reliable services are known, complete, and delivered upon. In this capacity RES maintains a high level of engagement with stakeholders across the organisation. RES applies complex requirements to critical capability and supporting systems, analyses complex systems and provides recommendations for remediation activities.
About the RoleThe SRE Section is looking to recruit staff with experience in, or a passion to ensure that the organisation can and does deliver the capability required of ASD. Examples of the types of work you may be required to undertake are: • Develop processes to ensure reliable system development• Analysis of System Architecture• Service Level management• Analysis of capability architecture• Analysis of complex systems to identify improvements• Develop system improvements to increase reliability of services• Develop system monitoring• Engage with organisational stakeholders• Develop reports that identify critical systems, risks and mitigation activities ASD4 – Site Reliability Engineer• With supervision, perform assigned modular tasks and respond to inquiries from stakeholders.• Perform simple technical activities associated with improving system reliability• Develop knowledge of Reliability Engineering practices ASD5 – Site Reliability Engineer• With limited supervision, deliver assigned broader tasks and provide guidance to stakeholders.• Actively engage with stakeholders to ensure system reliability, manage expectations and develop capability improvements• Maintain a sound working knowledge of Reliability Engineering practices ASD6 – Senior Site Reliability Engineer• Take responsibility for end-to-end delivery of assigned projects by coordinating with stakeholders• Contribute to the development of reliability and resilience processes• Analyse ASD capabilities to identify systems for improvement• Plan and develop improvements to ASD capabilities• Supervise junior staff Executive Level 1 – Senior Site Reliability Engineer• Work under broad direction to improve the availability of services• Perform a leadership role and manage a team of Site Reliability Engineers• Engage with key stakeholders across the organisation to develop and improve reliability processes• Coordinate with divisional stakeholders to ensure service delivery objectives are met• Managing service availability to deliver agreed levels of availability and ensure cost benefit value

The key duties of the position include:Our Ideal CandidateWe are seeking applicants who can work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The candidate will be part of the SRE Section and be involved in the uplift of existing capabilities by applying software engineering practices to IT operations tasks to maintain a scalable and reliable production environment for running software services.
Candidates applying to ASD4 and ASD5 are expected to understand the technologies. Upskilling opportunities will be provided; whereas, candidates applying to the ASD6 and EL1 levels are expected to have a high level of expertise using these technologies. Candidates at the EL1 level are expected, in addition, to be able to manage teams, projects and budgets.

Organisational Suitability Assessment – To be eligible for employment within ASD, the preferred applicant will be required to undergo an Organisational Suitability Assessment (see Organisational Assessment section).
Security Clearance - The preferred applicant will be required to successfully undergo the security clearance vetting process at a specified clearance level. The preferred applicant MUST be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. It is a condition of employment that applicants are willing and able to obtain and maintain the requisite security clearance for the duration of their employment with ASD.
