Position: Assistant Head of School
Location: Casuarina Steiner School
Employment Status: Temporary Term 2, 3 and 4 2024
Reports to: Head of School (HoS)
Purpose of the PositionThe Assistant Head of School collaborates with the Head of School, College of Teachers, staff, and the parent community to grow and sustain the school. They deliver a high-quality Steiner education and contribute to the school community’s vibrant life. The Assistant Head of School oversees teaching and learning in the school and is the direct line to leadership for students, parents, and prospective families.
This is a newly created temporary role as part of the school’s dynamic period of growth and ongoing maturing of its structures. The school’s leadership model provides a supportive structure for leadership.
The Assistant Head of School is responsible for upholding regulatory requirements related to curriculum and instruction, school families, and the community. They work closely with the Head of School and are part of the Leadership team, including the College Chair, Learning and Support Coordinator and Business Manager.
This role is as a Teaching Assistant Head of School. The Assistant Head of School will have a class with usual Release times (3 hours a week) and will be given an additional day’s release to perform executive duties in consultation with the Head of School.
Roles and ResponsibilitiesIn collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team, the Assistant Head of the School will engage in the following:
- Providing opportunities for understanding and practice of the School’s cultural framework through sound teaching and leadership practices in line with the pedagogy of the school.
- Lead the development of contemporary, research-informed pedagogy and develop effective Steiner-inspired pedagogy and strategies to boost student achievement.
- Modelling and giving leadership to effective teaching practice and classroom management strategies.
- Assist in managing student discipline, particularly incidents escalated from the classroom and those requiring follow-up with parents, carers and external agencies.
- Develop and maintain a program of performance review (appraisals) for all teachers in consultation with the Head of School.
- Participating in the Leadership Team to collaborate, assist and develop school excellence.
- Ensure compliance with NESA and government requirements.
- Support professional development and career planning.
- Develop a culture of continual improvement and implement school improvement processes.
- Work with the governing body (Board), executive team and college to collaboratively develop and implement a shared vision and strategic plan that inspires and motivates pupils, staff and all other school community members. Promote consultation, dialogue, and partnership with parents and staff.
- Collaboratively manage the school’s enrolment process.
- Managing casual arrangements on teaching days to cover staff absences appropriately.
- Teaching qualifications, current NESA registration, extensive training and experience in Steiner Education, and proven expertise in applying and promoting the Core Head of Schools in Steiner Education.
- Expertise in Steiner Education in Promoting and Encouraging growth in Anthroposophical understanding amongst staff, students, and the wider community.
- Demonstrated Capacity to manage the dual role of an exemplary classroom teacher effectively and executive responsibilities in a Steiner School.
- Demonstrated capacity to build, develop and maintain effective teams and develop cooperative and constructive working relationships that promote quality teaching and learning practices.
- Proven ability to successfully initiate, plan, implement, review, and renew programs in response to educational needs, priorities, and curriculum reform processes.
- Implement evidence-informed assessment and data analysis skills to improve teaching, learning and assessment across the curriculum.
- Demonstrated capacity to design and present highly effective staff professional learning that ensures continual development and growth of teacher.
