About This Opportunity
The Associate Animal Technician provides care and husbandry to all animal breeding and stock holding colonies across the University to ensure their welfare needs are always met.
Supporting the general care and monitoring of animals, you will assist with the daily operational requirements associated with maintaining the animal facility and carry-out research-associated procedures while working in a team environment. This role includes physical tasks involving lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy equipment and supplies.
Some key responsibilities include:
Provide care and husbandry to laboratory animals predominantly laboratory rodents
Assist with Animal cage changing, sexing, and weaning of animals
Ensuring the bio security of all animals holding facilities and cleanliness of all areas and equipment.
Additional HEW3 responsibilities:
Monitoring breeding performance of the stock, transgenic, and knockout lines of mice and maintaining their records
Generating pseudo-pregnant and timed mated females by checking plugs and recording results
Collection of blood samples for Health testing and performing routine injections (IP, S/C)
There are two fixed term opportunities available: 1x full-time, fixed term appointment for up to 3 years at the Herston campus.1x full-time, fixed term appointment through to 9 December 2024 at the St Lucia campus.
At HEW Level 2, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $59,909.08 - $61,312.75, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $70,093.62 - $71,735.92 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
At HEW Level 3, the full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $62,440.83 - $68,729.06, plus a generous super allowance of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be up to $73,055.77 - $80,413.00 annually. As this role is covered by an Enterprise Agreement, you will also receive regular remuneration increases – at least once a year.
About You
Completion of Certificate I or II level qualification in the animal industry or an equivalent combination of relevant work-related experience and/or education/training.
Willingness to undergo a formal qualification in Laboratory animal technology industry.
Able to demonstrate experience and interest in the care of animals.
Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other team members.
Ability to follow directions and adhere to the assigned duty statement.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Additional HEW3 criteria:
Certificate III in Laboratory Animal Technology with at least 2 years of experience in small laboratory animal care facilities.
Demonstrated experience and competence with routine techniques in rodents (injections, sample collection, and euthanasia).
Demonstrated understanding of industry regulatory requirements e.g., OH&S, OGTR, DAFF, and AEC regulatory requirements.
Ability to effectively plan and prioritise own workload, work independently and meet deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Mandatory Immunisations: It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.

Additionally, you are required to fully comply with necessary ongoing health monitoring procedures and control measures.
