The Infrastructure team is comprised of experienced professionals working across offices in Sydney, Toronto, London, New York, Sao Paulo and Mumbai. The team seeks to invest in a diversified portfolio of assets with stable long-term cash flows. Typically, our investment opportunities are in regulated networks (water, gas, electricity and telecoms), transportation (toll roads, ports, rail and airports) and energy (pipelines and storage) sectors. The Infrastructure portfolio (~C$46.5 billion valuation as at 31 December 2023) currently has over 29 direct investments spread across Australia, Canada, UK, USA, Europe, Latin America, India and Indonesia.
We are seeking a high performing individual, based in Sydney, to support our continued future growth. Reporting to the Managing Director – Asia Pacific (ex. India), the Associate / Senior Associate will be part of a team primarily covering infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region including Australia, and may also be involved in investments in other regions working as part of our global Infrastructure team, playing a key role in making and managing infrastructure investments around the world on a principal basis. The Associate / Senior Associate assists senior team members in evaluating potential infrastructure investment opportunities, conducting research, developing recommendations, participating in the negotiation and execution of investments and monitoring and managing investments.
Role Specific Accountabilities
A) Analyse Investment Opportunities:
i) Review:
- Research, analyse and evaluate a variety of Asia Pacific and global infrastructure investment opportunities
- Build complex dynamic financial models to analyse investment opportunities (including testing assumptions and sensitivities)
- Perform due diligence on opportunities including past and projected financial performance, quality of management teams, investment merits and risks, expected returns, regulatory environment, industry dynamics and other relevant investment factors
- Review 3rd party due diligence reports (commercial, technical, macro, legal, accounting, industry strategic reviews, environmental, etc.)
- Perform valuation analysis, including DCF, precedent transactions and comparable company analysis
- Meet with company management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other relevant topics as required
ii) Recommend:
- Under the supervision of senior team members, develop Infrastructure investment recommendations outlining potential investment opportunities
- Work with the team and support the development of investment thesis and evaluation of risks
- Assist in presenting investment recommendations to investment committees
B) Execute Infrastructure Investments:
- Assist with the overall execution of Asia Pacific and global infrastructure investments
- Manage discreet aspects / workstreams of the execution of Infrastructure investments
- Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)
C) Monitor & Manage Infrastructure Investments:
- Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance of Infrastructure investments, including working with senior management teams on strategic business initiatives
- Coordinate with various investment and operation groups at CPP Investments with respect to monitoring ongoing investments
- Assist in performing valuations for existing Infrastructure investments
- Attend annual meetings and board meetings as required
- Assist in building and leveraging relationships with portfolio company management teams and infrastructure fund managers
D) Build the Team:
- Participate in and contribute to weekly global departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings
- Share information by coordinating and entering information into knowledge management databases
- Assist in recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking, sourcing candidates and interviewing prospective hires, as required
