An exciting opportunity exists to join Yeppoon State High School! We are looking for a dedicated and hard-working individual to fill the position of a seasonal Boating Officer on a casual basis. Weekly hours will vary depending on the class timetables, maintenance schedules, excursions and camps, etc. It is estimated that up to 100 hours across Terms 3 and 4 this year (8 July - 13 December 2024, unless otherwise determined) will be required. In this role, you'll play a vital part in assisting the teachers in the delivery of a unique program of environmental education in coastal wetlands. As Ship's Captain, you command and operate boats as both an "onboard classroom" and as means of transporting students to join specific sites for marine studies. About the role:
The following is an indicative, rather than exhaustive list of activities that the Boat Officer may be expected to lead in addition to the activities outlined in the attached role description
- Prepare the school's rigid inflatable boat (RIB) for staff safety procedures and well as attend induction and pack away
- Pack boat motors onto trailer and take for maintenance repairs, including maintaining ships log book throughout the year.
- Maintain air pump for inflating sides of RIB when required.
- Take motors to marina and fix to tinnies.
- Attend repairs to tinnies, pack with all safety equipment, affix rego stickers, fix trolleys as necessary, painters etc. Basic repairs of 2 stroke motor (basic tool kit provided)
- Take RIB out to keep in use and test for any problems.
- Prepare RIB for boating classes, be present for boating lessons, pack away tinnies and RIB. Includes re-fuelling, oil and engine checks and flushed with fresh water of all vessels
- Prepare for students' overnight or day camps (prep for coast guard towing of tinnies to island, packing RIB, checking equipment, fuelling all tanks etc
- Participate in day and overnight camps
- Flush out and pack away motors onto trailer and return to storage area at Marina. Unpack and wash all camp equipment.
- Take RIB out to keep in use and test for any problems. Wash down, flush motor and check RIB before and after school holidays, return keys.
- Conduct regular checking of all equipment, greasing locks, repairs to flags, anchors, bailers, safety gear, trailer maintenance, carpets, oars, flares, rego, radio, tanks, clean marine bay, submit fuel card receipts, dead man's cord, etc... and all navigation lights checked.
Mandatory requirements:
- Current Working with Children Check clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.
- Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) coxswain licence appropriately endorsed for local operations or Master 5 licence.
- A restricted radio operator's certificate of proficiency.
- A current Senior First Aid Certificate.
- A "C" class driver's licence
- A Criminal History Check (CHC) will be undertaken for the recommended candidate prior to appointment. The department's own CHC form will be used for this check.
