The Ballarat Botanical Gardens has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Horticultural Plant Operator to join our team!
Based at the beautiful Ballarat Botanical Gardens, you will play a vital role in our team contributing to the maintenance and presentation of our City’s Heritage-listed gardens including the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Buninyong Botanic Gardens and Eureka Stockade Gardens.

The Role
Based at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, this vital team role is responsible for the maintenance and presentation of our premium lawns, paths, and other valued horticultural assets and involves:
- Lawn maintenance, mowing, edging and improvements, across all of our Heritage-listed gardens including Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Buninyong Botanic Gardens and Eureka Stockade Gardens.
- Assisting with garden maintenance and presentation.
- Operation and maintenance of horticultural equipment to enable required activities to be completed.
- Working as part of an enthusiastic team.
About You
The successful candidate will ideally have the following:
- Demonstrated relevant work experience in a similar horticultural field.
- Experience in garden maintenance.
- Mechanical plant operation skills required in horticultural maintenance - including mowers, brush cutters, and related hand tools.
- Knowledge of grass maintenance operations with a particular emphasis on mowing heights and techniques, fertiliser, and herbicide application.
- Commitment to effective management of health and safety issues especially relevant to this role.
- Current Drivers Licence.
- Literacy and numeracy skills sufficient to maintain daily records, read works instructions and perform chemical mixing and application calculations.
- It would be beneficial to have a Cert III qualification in horticulture.
- A positive ‘can-do’ attitude.
- A passion for plants!
