The Role
The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia's economic and national security landscape for decades to come.
The Sovereign Submarine Program Delivery (SSPD) Branch of the Australian Submarine Agency (ASA) seeks a knowledgeable, motivated EL2 Build Assurance Director to join our Adelaide team responsible for delivering Australia's nuclear-powered submarines. The Build Assurance Director is responsible for assuring the construction of Australia's nuclear submarines, ensuring they meet the exacting standards of the Australian Nuclear Regulator, Royal Australian Navy and our AUKUS partners.
Reporting to the Director Build, Test & Evaluation, in this role, you will develop close relationships with the SSPD Test & Evaluation Director, Contract Quality Assurance Director and Safety Manager to coordinate test and Build Assurance activities. These relationships will be complemented by strong connections with ASA Technical Division and the Australian shipbuilder.
The Build Assurance Director's role involves leadership and management responsibilities including providing strategic direction to their work unit, developing business plans, strategies and priorities, and monitoring work flow and performance.
About our Team
Within the ASA, SSPD is accountable for identifying the most appropriate program delivery model and construction methodology, defining infrastructure requirements, analysing and modelling existing Australian industry and workforce capability and capacity and undertaking cost estimation for acquiring and sustaining the future Nuclear-Powered Submarine fleet; in consultation with our AUKUS partners. SSPD consists of the following directorates: Business and Operations, Build, Test and Evaluation, Commercial Management, Engineering and Shipyard Infrastructure.
As part of the Build, Test and Evaluation Directorate, the Build Assurance Team is responsible for delivering Australian SSN-AUKUS submarines that meet the approved design safely and efficiently while complying with the cost and schedule agreed with Government. A small team of experts based in Adelaide; the Build Assurance team's task is diverse and challenging. The team will verify that each submarine has been constructed, activated and tested in accordance with the design prior to entering Royal Australian Navy service.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for this role will have vast knowledge of compliance and assurance within a complex production environment.
Extensive waterfront oversight experience working in ship or submarine construction projects, and lead auditor experience will be advantageous, as will experience working within an Authorised Engineering Management System (EMS) and a quality controlled system e.g. an ISO 9001:2015 certified system.
Highly desirable qualifications include a Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Management or another relevant discipline, a Masters Degree in an aligned field, and post graduate qualifications or professional recognition in a quality related field.
