About the organisation
The Australian Government has recently appointed, as one of 10 Jobs and Skills Councils, the Public Safety Industry Committee (PSIC) to establish a new entity to provide services that support skilled and robust public safety, public order, public resilience, and government workforces. This entity is known as Public Skills Australia and will provide the following services:
- development and consultation of workforce planning and training products that meets industry and policy needs
- implementation, promotion and monitoring of strategies that drive improvement to training delivery and monitor the impact of that delivery
- stewardship of intelligence relating to workforce challenges and skill needs.
Stakeholders that Public Skills Australia will work with include employer and employee members (career and volunteer) from the public safety and government industry sectors.
About the position
The Business Support Officer (Events) is instrumental in contributing to effective business and engagement activities. Responsibilities for this position include support for Public Skills Australia events and promotion activities, including liaising with public relations partners and the planning and coordination of Public Skills Australia engagements. The Business Support Officer (Events) reports to the Business Operations Manager, and will work in a small high performing team, that will see them collaborating with their team members, and supporting them when required. Supporting activities include, but is not limited to, arranging meetings, managing travel and accommodation arrangements, arranging and setting-up of venues, minute and note taking, managing calendars and diaries of senior Public Skills Australia staff.

Key responsibilities
This role will:
- Plan and coordinate engagement activities and events.
- Where required, support the broader business environment of PSA.
- Undertake travel bookings, plan for and set-up itineraries.
- Liaise with travel and events providers where necessary.
- Assist staff with staff travel expenditure and assist with budgeting for engagement activities and events.
- Provide broad administrative support to other PSA staff where required.
Key selection criteria
Essential
- Demonstrated experience in planning and coordinating events.
- Willingness to be hands-on working in a small team environment and provide broad administrative support when required.
- Demonstrated skills in travel and event bookings.
- Understanding of public relations principles.
Desirable
- Experience in an administration and/or corporate environment.
- Experience working within one or more of the following areas public relations, events coordination, administration or travel.
Other:
- Willing to obtain a police check and Working with Children Check.
- There may be times when it is required to work outside normal business hours i.e. evenings and weekends to meet stakeholder requirements.
Type of employment
This is a full-time position for a fixed term until 30 June 2026 (with the potential for an extension for another 12 months) to reflect Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) grant funding until 2025–26. It is anticipated that there may be a further option to extend the contract should DEWR funding be extended beyond the current 2025–26 timeline.
Location
Public Skills Australia supports flexible working arrangements, however as Public Skills Australia is in its establishment phase, it is anticipated that, in the first instance, work will be primarily conducted from its offices in Melbourne. It should be noted that staff can expect, dependant on work deliverables, that they may be required to work from the office location exclusively for a period of time. Flexible work arrangements will be negotiated between staff and relevant Managers, and be focused on balancing work requirements with staff needs.
