The Opportunity
The role to be based at our support office located on Flinders Street in the Adelaide CBD. Reporting to the General manager of merchandise the Category Manager (Meat/Seafood/Deli) is responsible for the execution of Foodland’s long-term strategy in these departments & to provide network growth. The Category Manager role needs to foster strong relationships with Foodland retailers, Metcash and suppliers in order to offer the premium Foodland customer experience.
The position requires the Category Manager to take responsibility for all day-to-day decisions for their category and to provide leadership and guidance to retailers, suppliers and Metcash to ensure that all parties implement Foodland’s long- and short-term plans.
Responsibilities include:
Key Duties
- Plan an effective promotional program by category and supplier.
- Maximize supplier income through ethical, strong and effective negotiation strategies.
- Provide support to the broader produce category & overall fresh strategy.
- Grow business revenue through trading terms, case deals and over and above activities.
- Negotiate and select products from group promotional activity.
- Execute promotional pricing in line with the group’s promotional guidelines.
- Accurately proof check catalogue and press advertising.
- Forecast promotional quantities for promoted products using reports, history and data.
- Conduct supplier reviews to identify category growth opportunities.
- Provide verbal and written communication to Foodland stakeholders regarding promotional changes, special events, competitions and marketing activities.
- Assist with data entry and related admin tasks.
A bit about you

- Experience in retail or FMCG (supermarkets / fresh), either in a retail or head office environment
- A capacity to think and operate strategically.
- Advanced problem-solving capability, with results-oriented attitude
- Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively, influence and build relationships.
- A strategic focus: ability to recognize opportunities, show judgment, intelligence and common sense.
- Strong time management skills and the ability to work with hard deadlines.

Selection Criteria
- Experience in the South Australian supermarket industry,
- Tertiary qualification (in a related business discipline) is highly desirable,
- Enthusiasm, can-do attitude and a desire to learn,
- Ability to analyse and interpret data,
- Strong communications skills (both oral and written),
