The first Bernardi’s store began in Forbes in 1969 as a fruit market run by Tony Bernardi who had spent much of the previous decade selling fruit and vegetables out of the back of his truck.
Almost 50 years later Tony – along with his three sons David, Peter and Joseph – operate four large format independent supermarkets located in Bathurst, Blayney, Forbes and West Wyalong as well as a stand-alone discount variety store; Discount Dave’s at Parkes. The group also has nine Ten Tops stores.

Job Brief
We are looking for an experienced Buyer/Category Manager to join our growing team. Whilst the role will include standard buying tasks, the main purpose of this role is to liaise with wholesalers to decide ranging along with working with our direct supplier base to compliment ranges and drive footfall into our stores. You will be part of a broader established buying & marketing team to support you, however given our size you will have the autonomy to personalise the role as you see fit.
The role is based out of Crows Nest, Sydney, NSW. We also pride ourselves on bringing positive energy to the table & having a sense of fun
Responsibilities
- Work with our existing supply base to cultivate/evaluate best options based on quality, price
- Identify and engage new suppliers to be to fulfill the brief – if needs be
- Select and buy goods for sale in our retail stores
- Negotiate purchase, promotion and supply arrangements with suppliers, plan Grocery promotions for the supermarkets & communicate to stores
- Liaise with management on long-term planning and sales promotions
- Monitor stock in and stock out. It is just important to us the stock pulls through as it is securing the deal. Exit slow moving/dead stock efficiently
- Monitor sales data and stock levels, and use our suite of power BI live reports to make informed decisions as sales/trends evolve and to keep informed of changing market conditions
- Design and implement pricing, marketing, promotional and display strategies
- Build on existing and new supplier relationships. They are as important to us as our customers are
- On as needs basis, attend fairs, events, and suppliers here to anticipate consumer trends and determine quantity, style and quality of goods to be purchased
- Adequate time spent in stores to keep close to the street & in touch with what our team & customers are actually saying
- Own the communication to the stores & support office
- Identify actual sales and margin verse budgeted and using data to explain any abnormalities
- Frequent range reviews from suppliers to maintain ranges and sell through
- Actioning reports/discrepancies to maintain sales and margin
Skills/Experience
- Proven experience in a similar buying role, ideally having worked in the independent grocery sector
- Outstanding communication skills
- Demonstrated effective negotiation skills
- Able to read & keep up with trends including regular reviews of competitor data
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel
Base Salary: $100,000 excluding Super
