About the Role

BMA is Australia’s largest producer and supplier of seaborne metallurgical coal and is owned 50:50 by BHP and Mitsubishi Development. BMA operates seven Bowen Basin mines (Goonyella Riverside, Broadmeadow, Daunia, Peak Downs, Saraji, Blackwater and Caval Ridge) and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay. 

BMA has an exciting career opportunity for a seasoned mining leader to join as the GM Caval Ridge and participate as a key member of the Asset Leadership where you focus on optimizing productivity and securing a long-life future for BMA. 


Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will be accountable for:

  • Delivering a safe system of work to protect the health & safety of people and the environment in accordance with statutory and BHP requirements.

  • Creating a culture in which engagement, inclusion and diversity thrive, so that everyone is motivated and supported to realise their full potential.

  • Developing operating performance targets together with plans that demonstrate how these will be achieved through the Corporate Alignment Planning (CAP) processes.

  • Leading with business acumen and understand capital management, and collaborate with other operations in BMA to ensure capital is managed and prioritized for the optimal return on investment.

  • Engaging in continuous improvement through the disciplined application of the BHP Operating System, and its standards, processes, systems and structures.

  • Driving and promoting cost efficiency and productivity improvements, and identifying and solving problems in a collaborative manner.

  • Ensuring cross-functional integration through building trustful relationships, influencing and collaborating to deliver safe performance and improve productivity.

  • Maintaining a performance management system to monitor and control the availability utilization rate to provide a stable operation, whilst striving for zero breakdowns and unplanned downtime through proactive defect elimination and lifecycle asset management.

  • Safeguarding and enhancing the standing and reputation of BHP especially to our host communities.  

This is a global search with the role based residentially in Moranbah, Queensland or FIFO from Brisbane, Australia.

About You

As a seasoned leader in the resources sector, you will have an extensive background in open-cut or underground mining operations and possess strong technical knowledge in geology, geotechnical and mining operations.  Previous experience in the Queensland Coal industry is preferable, along with a Senior Site Executive Qualification (QLD) however for the right person we will support you in obtaining this qualification. You will have had exposure to mining or infrastructure projects in execution phase, as well as having a good understanding of the maintenance of mobile equipment. 

You will be a strategic thinker with strong commercial abilities, who is able to focus and prioritise critical deliverables to provide clear direction and engage with stakeholders to drive performance through operating discipline to achieve outstanding results.  Your communication, listening and influencing skills will be first class, as you are at ease in working with range of stakeholders from regulators, senior executives through to our front-line operations, and can work within a matrix organisation.

 A tertiary qualification in mining, geoscience, or similar qualification is required.

About Our Process
