Job description

Purpose of the role:

The role of a chef in the early education and care environment is to plan and facilitate high quality, nutritious meals in a safe and hygienic environment. The chef will work in accordance with the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Educational and Care Regulations, National Quality Framework and State Department of Health.

Key Duties:

  • Prepare a nutritional and well-balanced meal for children from 6 weeks to 6 years of age in collaboration with the Nominated Supervisor and other staff on a monthly basis.
  • Ensure menu’s take into consideration the provision of 50% of the recommended minimum daily requirements from each of the 5 food groups.
  • Ensure all individual dietary requirements for children are met, whether they be medically or culturally related.
  • Organise orders for purchasing and liaise with suppliers. Conduct weekly and daily shopping for fresh food under the direction of the centre Nominated Supervisor.
  • Adhere to budgeting and work closely with the centre Nominated Supervisor to sustain this.
  • Present all meals including morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea to be visually pleasing.
  • Create a menu including an ingredients list that will be sent to families via Kindyhub.
  • Liaise with other Chef’s and professional agencies e.g. Munch and Move to collaborate ideas on how to create and maintain nutritional needs of the children.

Accountabilities:

1. Safety: Ensure a safe and healthy environment

  • Ensure a safe environment is maintained for both staff and children.
  • Ensure children are supervised during cooking experiences.
  • Deliver meals to each room at appropriate intervals throughout the day maintaining high levels of hygiene and food safety.
  • At all times maintain a clean and hygienic environment.
  • Conduct regular cleaning and sanitising according to the service Food Safety Plan.
  • Participate in house keeping duties as required in the centre.
  • Be responsible for the safety and hygiene practices within the centre kitchen.
  • Ensure all food and ingredients is stored and labelled in accordance with the centre Food Safety Plan.
  • Promptly report any equipment that is broken or unsafe to the centre director.
  • Conduct frequent checks to ensure all equipment is clean, safe and fit for purpose.
  • Complete and maintain all relevant documentation and checklists directly in relation to the kitchen and food items.

2. Quality: Bring quality learning outcomes for children

  • Prepare meals fresh for each day.
  • Demonstrate strong organisational ability to maintain Food Safety Program and document relating to children’s medical and dietary requirements.
  • Liaise with educators in relation to planned cooking experiences. Assist with procurement of ingredients and materials.
  • Be willing to help with preparations for cooking experiences with the children.
  • Liaise with the state food safety authority and implement directions as requested.

3. Partnerships: Create and maintain meaningful and purposeful relationships with families and the community

  • Develop a good rapport with families.
  • Encourage families to become involved with the centre including events.
  • Facilitate the contribution families have to the service Quality Improvement Plan.
  • Share menus with the centre families and staff via Kindyhub.
  • Ensure the current menu is displayed in an aesthetically pleasing way in the centre reception.
  • Collaborate with staff at the centre including the centre Nominated Supervisor to produce recipe of the week.
  • Liaise with marketing coordinators to share kitchen updates including recipe of the week, with our families and social media community.

4. Team: Build and maintain respectful and professional relationships by contributing to a positive team culture

  • Communicate positively and respectfully with children, families, management and educators.
  • Handle complaints in accordance with the centre’s Grievance Resolution Procedure.
  • Professional conduct is required at all times both inside and outside of the centre when discussing the centre. Breaches of confidentiality including via social media will lead to performance management and possible termination of employment.
  • Actively promote and maintain a positive image of the centre.
  • Attend all out of hours team meetings and training as required.
  • Cooperate with the Nominated Supervisor and lead educators in day-today charge of operations and accept directions and constructive suggestions for continual improvement.

5. Inclusion and interactions with children: Support access, active participation and inclusion of all children and families

  • Consider and implement recipes that reflect the cultural backgrounds of families and educators at the service.
  • Cater menus to the developmental needs of each child.

Qualifications:

  • Certificate in food safety, nutrition and menu planning
  • Current Working with Children Check as required under legislation
  • Food safety Supervisor Certificate
  • Preferred - Current First Aid Certificate (approved by ACECQA)
  • Preferred - Current CPR Certificate (approved by ACECQA)
  • Preferred - Current Anaphylaxis Training (approved by ACECQA)
  • Preferred - Child Protection Training QLD- Renew Annually NSW- CHCPRT001Unit regular updates are recommended.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge and attend additional training as necessary.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $60,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year

Schedule:

8 hour shift
