Job description

Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust are currently seeking a suitably qualified Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead their organisation in East Gippsland.

About Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust

Originally the land of the Gunai/Kurnai people, it became home to Indigenous people from all over the state who were forcibly removed from their homelands. Many years later, some of these same families were forced to leave the mission and ‘assimilate’ into townships.

The mission is surrounded by beautiful waterways and coastal bushland that has been a magnet for tourists since the 1870s. Many of these tourists have incorporated a visit to the local Aboriginal people at Lake Tyers as part of their holiday.

The people of Lake Tyers have been strong and vocal in their struggle to retain their land. In 1970 this fight was rewarded with the handing back of Bung Yarnda to the people.

About the Role

Day to day management of the affairs of the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust will be the responsibility of the Chief Executive Officer and will include, but not subject to change:

  • To lead, manage and strategically plan for the successful long-term operations and sustainability of the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust and community in accordance with the vision and goals of the Committee of Management
  • Ensure the Trust is strategically aligned with other services and identify new business opportunities, working with external financial managers and funding agencies to ensure all funding and regulatory obligations of the Trust are met
  • Establish a strong relationship with the Committee of Management and in particular the Chairman
  • Establish relationship with the Trust community and other stakeholders
  • Work with managers and key staff to improve operational systems, processes, and policies to support management reporting, information flow and management, business processes and planning
  • Undertake and be responsible for the development and implementation of appropriate human resource management policies and practices including recruitment, training and development, performance management and remuneration for all staff
  • Develop, implement, and monitor the Annual Budget, Strategic Plan and Business Plan and annual reporting processes
  • Develop, review and revise operating procedures, staffing structure and implement change as required
  • Prudently manage resources within budget guidelines and in accordance with legislation
  • Oversee the management of all Trust facilities, assets, and infrastructure
  • Maintain the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust share register and consult with shareholders as required under the guidance of the Committee of Management
  • Ensure the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust is compliant with its obligations as detailed in the Aboriginal Lands Act 1970
  • Be a key link with Emergency Management operations CFA, DSE in regards to effective management of fire safety and emergency responses
  • Undertake other related activities as required

Key Selection Criteria (must be addressed for application to be considered complete):
  1. Ability to work with Aboriginal people and an awareness of the challenges to Aboriginals in the region, understanding the issues that relate to the health and wellbeing of all people living and working within the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust
  2. Master and or graduate level of business management qualifications or a mix of equivalent qualifications and experience pertinent to the position.
  3. Current experience and demonstrated success in operational management in a for profit or for purpose organisation, with relevant qualifications
  4. Experience in funding contract management and reporting, including liaison with government agencies
  5. Qualifications and/or knowledge and experience in a leadership role within an Aboriginal Community organisation
  6. Strong leadership capabilities, evidenced in well-developed problem solving, analytical and conceptual skills, including a sound knowledge of accounting principles and practices
  7. Strong written and oral interpersonal communication skills with the ability to build and maintain productive working relationships and negotiate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  8. Knowledge of principles and procedures for staff recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, employee relations and negotiation, and information systems
  9. Demonstrate effective organisational skills, including the ability to effectively prioritise and manage multiple tasks and deadlines and manage competing priorities within a small team environment
