Resources Victoria, part of the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) develops policy, programs and regulation for the sustainable development of the State’s resources including extractives, minerals and petroleum. This is achieved through acquiring and providing high quality geoscience data to inform government decision making and licencing of the resources sector. Resources Victoria delivers land use planning and supports investment in low emission technologies to stimulate economic activity in the State’s earth resources sector.
The Role
The Chief Geoscience Information Officer (CGIO) is responsible for the development, direction, and implementation of the Geological Survey of Victoria (GSV) Geoscience Data Strategy. They provide strategic direction and leadership to the Geoscience Knowledge team who are responsible for overseeing the collection, quality assessment, management and delivery of Victoria’s geoscience evidence base in line with government priorities. The CGIO is ultimately responsible for ensuring a high-quality complex geoscience data repository and associated advisory services to both internal and external stakeholders within agreed budgets and timelines. They will manage the efficient operation and delivery of the State’s geoscientific information through best practice data collection and management practices. This will require optimal use of new technology including AI, machine learning or data mining applications and will ultimately prove to be a significant attractor to exploration and the associated investment in Victoria.
The Requirements
A proven strategic leader with a track record of data science stewardship in government, the resources sector or consultancy, you will have experience designing strategy, influencing at Ministerial or board level, and implementing new processes/systems/technologies. The professional gravitas to gain the respect and confidence of the Secretary, the CEO, traditional owners and the earth resources community is a subjective quality to assess but essential to the success of the role. Similarly, the ability to broker a consensus of minds across the complex relationships that play out between government and private entities in this sector is a key quality required to deliver the best outcomes. A tertiary qualification in IT systems, geoscience or Data Science is required. Experience in the earth resources industry is not essential but would assist in identifying and analysing patterns/relationships in this sector and identifying future data requirements and delivery channels to the resources industry.
The Why
This is a key role to maintain and better manage stewardship of 175 years of Victorian geoscience data. The CGIO will lead a high performing technical team to ensure best practice stewardship of data essential to the protection of the natural environment whilst stimulating sustainable economic activity in the State’s resources sector.
