About the role
As a Child and Family Practitioner within our team, you'll play a pivotal role in providing support and healing to children, young people, and parents/caregivers grappling with issues related to domestic and Family violence. Your responsibilities include conducting thorough assessments, delivering evidence-based counselling, and crafting comprehensive risk assessments and safety plans. With a focus on empowerment, you'll collaboratively develop individual support plans, fortifying the relationship between safe caregivers and children/young people post-crisis.
This role emphasises collaboration, working closely with our team and local agencies to address the challenges of domestic and Family violence. It's a part-time position (0.6 to 0.8 FTE) with an opportunity to flex up to a 1.0 FTE cover a maternity leave period, providing a unique opportunity to contribute to our cohesive team in Townsville.
Salary and Benefits
- Pay range $41.52 to $49.65 to p/h, part-time 3 to 4 days a week

About you

The successful candidate for the Family Counsellor role will be forward-thinking, accountable, and possess the ability to create a positive, engaging, and safe environment for children and parents to express themselves, utilising an approachable and encouraging demeanour.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate they are able to meet the following Key Selection Criteria:
Qualifications and Experience: Possession of a tertiary qualification in social work, psychology, or human services, with at least 2 years of relevant experience in a similar field.
Expertise in Domestic and Family Violence: Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge and experience in addressing Domestic and Family Violence issues, including a contemporary understanding of gendered and racial drivers and dynamics.
Trauma-Informed Practice: Proven ability to apply trauma-informed practice, drawing from diverse practice and theoretical frameworks to address the cumulative, compounding, and complex impacts of trauma.
Empowerment and Autonomy: Demonstrated ability to empower clients' autonomy in understanding and responding to risk, particularly in supporting and responding to children as victim-survivors.
Expertise with Behavioural Challenges: Capability to work with children experiencing behavioural challenges within a trauma-informed framework, aiding in their understanding and management of adverse effects from their experiences.
Nuanced Understanding of Behaviours: Highly developed understanding of the nuances of behaviours associated with violence, including covert abuse tactics and the nature and impacts of coercive control.
Legislative Compliance: Thorough understanding and experience working with current legislation, including the Domestic and Family Violence Act 2012, Child Protection Act 1999, Common Risk Assessment Framework, and DFV Information Sharing Guidelines.
Communication Skills: Ability to skilfully and sensitively communicate complex information in both written and verbal formats, especially when faced with heightened states of distress.
Intersectionality and Diversity: Capability to bring knowledge of intersectionality and diversity to develop and maintain respectful relationships with clients, across the service system, and within the community.
Cultural Competence: Ability to work in a culturally safe manner, including an understanding of the ongoing impacts of colonization and intergenerational trauma on First Nations peoples, fostering cultural competence throughout interactions.
General
Highly competent with technology e.g., Microsoft suite of programs, and the ability to work within various databases.
Current QLD C Class Driver’s License which must remain current during the term of employment.
Working with Children Check (Blue Card) which must remain current during the term of employment.
Australia: National Police Check Clearance – at organisation expense.
