Job description

Bring your understanding of the Australian policy landscape and your analytical and communication skills to an exciting role in a global team at Ember. We are looking for a candidate to deliver our policy analysis and advocacy work in Australia focussed on reducing emissions from the coal mining sector. This is an interesting role that could help shape the future of Climate Policy. A professional background in policymaking or in industry (such as mining or energy) is welcomed. We are recruiting an analyst to support work to understand and tackle Australia’s coal mine methane (CMM) emissions. We already have a great reputation in Australia for providing policy and data analysis on this topic, as one of our key geographies within a global programme that also covers Europe and Asia. Our work focuses on investigating individual mines and mine expansions, raising awareness of the scale of coal mine methane emissions within the climate network, advising on the solutions to these emissions and understanding how they fit within the context of Australian Climate Policy. You do not necessarily need specific expertise in mining, coal or methane missions (though any of these are welcomed!), but we are looking for someone who is passionate about working on a complex and challenging climate issue who understands how policy works.Data can help change the world, but only when people can understand it. Your work will have a real impact in shining the light on the scale and importance of coal mine methane emissions, which are a rapidly growing space within the climate community. And you will have the opportunity to work in a dynamic global team within a fast growing and innovative organisation.Australia is the fourth largest coal mine methane emitter, and these emissions are expanding rapidly. Methane pollution from coal mines has been ignored for years, but tackling it is one of the most critical short term challenges to reduce global heating this decade.RequirementsKey responsibilities

  • Support our existing Australia coal lead in setting the direction of our Australia CMM work
  • Carry out research and analysis on both state and Federal CMM emissions policies, challenges and opportunities, alongside our CMM data team.
  • Use this research to develop and deliver key political briefings on policies and initiatives for reducing emissions and understand where this fits within existing policy landscapes
  • Work closely with a network of NGOs and partner organisations to raise awareness on CMM and the solutions
  • Use your research to write engaging reports and publications and make suggestions for how to make sure our key messages reach a wide audience
Location
  • Australia (fully remote). Occasional travel may be required.
RequirementsMust have:
  • Minimum five (5) years working in relevant senior research, analyst or policy
positions for a climate think tank, NGO, government or private sector organisation (background in the mining industry also welcomed); * A well developed political network within the Australian regulatory and/or civil society space
  • Proven experience in shifting government policy
  • Ability to research and source emissions (or equivalent) data and curate datasets
  • Excellent written communication and experience writing reports or publications
  • Ability to verbally communicate complex messages clearly and succinctly
  • An understanding of how to work with media, social media and strategic communications
  • Passion for working in the climate and energy space and an understanding of the sector and what influences policy.
  • Able to work independently and effectively in both spoken and written English, such as writing articles and reports without supervision and attending meetings with regional government officials and international bodies.
  • Passionate about reducing global greenhouse gas emissions
  • Confident working remotely with a broad range of people, from different countries and time zones.
Nice to have
  • Fascination with data and data visualisation
  • Knowledge of methane/ coal sector/ steel sector or industry background
  • Experience in climate advocacy
  • Experience engaging with government officials or industry representatives
We are especially keen to encourage applications from people underrepresented in climate change analysis and campaigning. Climate change is a race issue, a class issue, and a gender issue. We welcome applicants with lived experiences of these issues.BenefitsSalary: 78,246 AUD with potential progression to 101,406 AUD plus 11% superannuationContract: Full time (but only working 9 days every fortnight with no reduction in pay), permanent subject to a 3 month probationary period.Further benefits:
