What you'll be doing

SESLHD Drug and Alcohol Service offers a range of treatment and support services for people with problems from their alcohol, prescription or illicit drug use, and/or their families and carers. Outpatient D&A services are located in clinics at the Langton Centre in Surry Hills, St George Hospital in Kogarah, and Caringbah Community Health Centre at Sutherland Hospital. Inpatient D&A services are provided at Sydney Hospital, Prince of Wales, St. George and Sutherland Hospitals.
This position is responsible for providing senior nursing leadership to the Opioid Treatment Program and is expected to demonstrate advanced evidence based drug and alcohol treatment knowledge in the provision of patient care. This position will work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary health team to provide: treatment, support, assessment, crisis intervention, case management, care planning and evaluation of nursing care to clients in line with the NSW Health Clinical Care Standards: Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment; whilst maintaining and developing relationships with the multidisciplinary team, relevant services and stakeholders, harm reduction and commitment to harm reduction philosophy.
Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.
All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.
A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.
In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.
Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

  • Current Registered Nurse Division 1 National Registration (AHPRA) with post-registration qualification relevant to drug and alcohol nursing and at least three (3) years clinical experience within the drug and alcohol nursing field.
  • Demonstrated advanced skills and knowledge in the provision of drug and alcohol support and treatment, including opioid pharmacotherapy treatment, with clients with complex presentations and an ability to use advanced clinical skills in patient/client assessment and care planning.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the provision and development of clinical practice by utilisation of evidence based research with a demonstrated understanding of current NSW Health Policies related to D&A treatment including opioid replacement treatment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, carers and a diverse range of health care providers including those in government, non-government and community organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, with an emphasis on service delivery, quality of care and team cohesion with an ability to identify and improve opportunities to enhance continuity of care between the D&A sector, primary care providers and community based services.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to harm minimisation principles and a demonstrated flexible, non-judgemental approach to client care.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to utilise information technology systems within a variety of applications.
