Job description

Hey there, we’re Australia’s first technology enabled and data driven home care company. We were founded 7 years ago with the belief that technology can make us more human, and since then we’ve since gone on to become a top 20 national home care provider. We have been consistently placed in the top 10 of AFR’s Boss Best Places to Work and our customer NPS score is regularly 60+ (That’s really good, especially for human services!).

About the job

Initially you’ll be seconded to the Data Signals Team at our sibling company, The Lookout Way, where you’ll partner with the Lead Data Engineer to work on the ETLs powering Lookout’s Analytics and BYO BI products. You’ll then return to Five Good Friends to shape the design and development of our next generation ETL based on Lookout’s BYO BI product to set us up the next 7 years of growth.

Your responsibilities will be to:

  • Work with the Lead Data Engineer to prioritise information needs.
  • Develop algorithms to transform data into useful, actionable information for business analysts.
  • Design, build, test, and maintain data pipeline architectures, in particular, to maintain our data warehouses and cloud infrastructure.
  • Provision and maintain business intelligence (BI) tools for enabling Data Analysts and power users to visualise information.
  • Ensure data pipelines, cloud infrastructure, and BI tools are always available, consistent, and confidential using a combination of monitoring and data validation techniques.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with data governance and security policies.
  • Provision new cloud infrastructure from time-to-time.
  • Research and prototype new technologies from time-to-time.
  • Providing direct support to business analysts. Where possible, the focus will be on enabling them to build the dashboards and reports that they need, but it may also include building them on their behalf from time-to-time.

Our shared data stack with The Lookout Way is:

  • Main pipelines are orchestrated via Dagster with dbt and Python running on our own private AWS cloud.
  • Customer pipelines are orchestrated via Fivetran. Fivetran sources from customer partitioned schemas into the customer’s destination of choice.
  • Application and data warehouse databases are PostgreSQL running in our own Heroku Private Space.
  • Logs are drained in to Datadog for monitoring and alerts.

You’ll be influential in standing up our next generation stack distinct from The Lookout Way. Should we stick with Dagster, AWS, and Metabase, or should we go all-in on Microsoft Fabric? You’ll help us decide.

About you

Your qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 3-5 years experience in a similar role.
  • PostgreSQL.
  • ETL technologies with a preference for SQL, Python, dbt, Dagster, and Fivetran.
  • DevOps technologies with a preference for AWS, Terraform, and GitHub actions.
  • BI technologies with a preference for Metabase.
  • Optionally, software engineering experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Optionally, governance and security experience with SOC2 or E8

Your preferred way of working:

  • Customer-centric and proactive professional.
  • Clearly and persuasively communicate complex ideas in both writing and oral formats.
  • Broadcast high-level blockers, high-level wins, and summaries of work.
  • Anticipatory of giving sufficient time for others to act.
  • Aligned with Five Good Friends’ values and mission.

You can work remotely from home anywhere in Australia as long as you have a rock solid internet connection and a comfortable setup. We do have a beautiful office in South Brisbane, and we also have dedicated co-working spaces in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, and Adelaide. If you live within an hour of these spaces we expect you to drop in once a week, but other than that, we work remotely.

We know women and other underrepresented minority groups tend only to apply if they feel they are a perfect match. If this opportunity excites you and you think you can do it, please don't rule yourself out, even if you don't feel like you tick every box. Don't self reject!

You'll be working with the data of vulnerable people so we require you to complete a National Police Check and the NDIS Worker Orientation Module. You must have the right to work in Australia.

About our pay and perks

The is a permanent full-time position, but we’re open to 4 day a week arrangements. Depending on your skills and experience, we're prepared to offer you a salary up to $140,000 + super, no matter where you live in Australia. You'll also get a $4,500 budget to pick your laptop, accessories, and display.

The way we work and the perks we offer are designed to help you live a fulfilling life. Some of us start late, and some of us finish early. We overlap for most of the day, and we work a regular week where overtime is rare. The work we do is meaningful, and the problems we solve are interesting. We like coming to work and working together, but we're 200 people who are parents, carers, siblings, friends, students, athletes, dancers, gamers, writers, gardeners, and hobbyists with a life away from work too.

You'll get the standard 4 weeks of paid annual leave and the customary 10 days of paid carer's/sick leave. You'll also get:

  • Wellbeing Allowance: An annual $500 wellbeing allowance to spend on anything that betters your life away from work (E.g. Cooking classes, running shoes, fitness tracker)
  • Extra annual leave: +1 day of paid annual leave every year you are with us after your second year so you can take longer holidays.
  • Paid super on parental leave: We will continue to pay your super when you take unpaid parental leave (Up to 12 months) as the primary caregiver, so your super keeps compounding.
  • Top up parental leave: We will pay the difference to your regular salary and parental leave from the Commonwealth Government for four weeks (+2 weeks every year you're with us) if you're the primary caregiver, or two weeks if you're the non-primary caregiver.
  • Employee assistance programme: You can get private and professional counselling at any time.

About our hiring process

We're aiming for a flexible start in July. These are the steps the successful candidate will take:

  1. Make a submission
  2. Interview #1 to get acquainted and find alignment with your growth and our company.
  3. Interview #2 to collaborate on a problem together.
  4. Offer, referee checks, and background checks.
  5. Start on a Thursday

We're grateful for your time and look forward to hearing from you!
