Position and Area Profile:
Fiona Stanley Hospital, Rockingham General Hospital and Peel Health Campus within South Metro Health Service all offer Emergency Department (ED) opportunities to suitable ED Registrar candidates.
Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) is a 783-bed tertiary hospital offering a range of health services including the State Adult Burns Service, a comprehensive cancer centre, purpose-built mental health unit, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric and neonatal services, and the State Rehabilitation Service. FSH also delivers specialised services such as heart and lung transplantations, renal transplantation and hyperbaric medicine.
Since opening in early Feb 2015, FSH ED has developed into a high functioning unit that is the busiest ED in the state, and one of the busiest in Australasia. It has a diverse case mix including toxicology, complex medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, burns, cardiothoracics and transplant medicine.
The ED has 70 beds including a 15-bed resuscitation area and a separate 15 bed paediatric triage and treatment area. The department saw 110,000 presentations in the last year, with 25 per cent of those being paediatric. As such, this department provides an excellent opportunity for paediatric skill development and completion of your paediatric logbook.
The ED has a comprehensive primary and fellowship exam teaching program, active ED academic and toxicology units, ED Simulation program, as well as an active ED ultrasound unit with opportunities for Registrars to complete US accreditation with supervised training time.
Trainee Registrars have access to rotations at FSH in Anaesthetics, ICU, Acute General Medicine, General Paediatrics and Cardiology. We have close links to private, regional and rural Emergency Departments to comply with non-major referral ED training time.
Within the ED at FSH we have several ACEM accredited special skill training positions including ED Education and Simulation, Geriatric Falls, Research, Toxicology and Ultrasound. Interested Registrars should indicate interest in one of these on their application.
Rockingham General Hospital (RGH) is a 229-bed general hospital located near coastal Rockingham City, 40km south of FSH. It offers in-patient services in acute, general and geriatric medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, neonates and paediatrics, psychiatry and an ICU.
Rockingham ED consists of 23 adult beds, 5 bed paediatric unit and a 15 bed short stay unit, seeing 62,000 presentations a year, and a 30% paediatric case mix.
The department has dedicated primary and fellowship exam teaching in addition to an active simulation and education programme. Anaesthetics and ICU rotations are available to ED Registrars at RGH.
Peel Health Campus (PHC) is a 206-bed general hospital located in the City of Mandurah, 60km south of FSH on the doorstep of the south-west, known for its stunning beaches, internationally significant wetlands, and some of Australia’s most spectacular waterways for boating, fishing and wildlife. The hospital offers a range of in-patient services including general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics.
The emergency department at PHC currently sees over 45,000 patients per year and consists of 22 treatment bays, 5 consult rooms and 16 short stay beds.
All 3 sites are accredited for 24 months of ACEM training, offer weekly protected Registrar teaching time, a varied case-mix, the opportunity to work with friendly dynamic and hands on FACEMs with a broad spectrum of interests including toxicology, ultrasound, advanced airway management, simulation and education.
For those not formally training in Emergency Medicine, who are wanting to upskill and gain formal credentialing in Emergency Medicine, we offer supervision & support in completion of the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC), Intermediate Emergency Medicine Training Program, and Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Program.
