Special Olympics Australia (“SOA”) was established in 1976 providing sporting opportunities for people with an intellectual disability of all ages and abilities. Special Olympics is a year-round multi-sports program for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community. We create accessible sports training, coaching and competition opportunities for all people with an intellectual disability whether they want to take part in recreational activities, aspire to climb the competition ladder or seek additional opportunities outside of our program.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide inclusive training and competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities enabling opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, improve wellbeing, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with the community.

Primary Purpose of Position

To ensure operational compliance and strong governance of Sub-Programs (States/Clubs) through the leadership of accreditation and performance monitoring, and the management of volunteers, integrity, complaints, risk, policies, procedures, systems, and engagement with the National Council and State/Club Leadership teams.

Key Accountabilities

Governance

  • Provide leadership, resources and support to Club/State Leadership Teams to adhere to policies and deliver contemporary practices
  • Maintain full complement of volunteers for roles on Club/State Leadership Teams
  • Effectively engage and provide support and guidance to the National Council
  • Ensure Sub-Program adherence to all relevant policies and procedures
  • Develop, implement and monitor the Club Accreditation Framework

Compliance

  • Oversee the volunteer and coach registration process, including screenings/checks
  • Oversee the athlete registration and medical screening process
  • Undertake annual Club Performance Reviews to monitor performance
  • Ensure State/Club use of SOA nominated systems and ensure integrity of data

Membership

  • Develop and implement athlete and volunteer recruitment strategies
  • Develop and implement athlete and volunteer retention strategies
  • Develop and implement volunteer induction, training and development
  • Oversee all volunteer engagement to ensure quality feedback and experiences
  • Ensure accurate member records and high-quality data management
  • Identify and capitalise on opportunities to reward and recognise SOA volunteers

Integrity and Complaints

  • Manage implementation of the National Integrity Framework
  • Fulfil the roles of National Integrity Manager and National Complaints Manager
  • Design, implement and review SOA’s integrity education and training plan
  • Maintain strong working relationship with Sport Integrity Australia
  • Manage complaints and integrity issues arising in breach of any SOA policy

Leadership

  • Provide staff management for Member Services Coordinator
  • Provide operational and logistical support to the Chief Operations Officer
  • Represent SOA at Club/State committee meetings, workshops and forums
  • Actively contribute to a ‘One Team’ culture at all levels of the organisation
  • Always role model the SOA values and place athletes at the centre of what we do
