The National Archive’s is advertising a number of ongoing and non-ongoing APS 6 positions across three Collection Management functions: Storage and Lending, Digitisation, and Transfers. We’re seeking experienced archival, collection, or information management professionals who are looking to focus their career into a managerial role. The successful applicants will be capable leaders with experience managing staff, and who enjoy collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to deliver successful outcomes. As a manager in the Collection Management branch, you will be working alongside colleagues in the leadership team to secure and store incoming Commonwealth records, support client needs by ensuring prompt record retrievals, and oversee successful digitisation requests and projects to facilitate collection access.
The Collection Management Branch is responsible for transferring, storing, preserving, and digitising the National Archives' collection so it remains accessible for future generations. The Branch develops policies and systems as well as provides services, undertakes research, and implements projects to ensure the care, management, and accessibility of archival records. The Branch is also responsible for identifying information management requirements for Australian Government agencies to ensure Australian Government information assets (records, information, and data) are created, collected, and managed effectively.
The Collection Operations Section is responsible for securing and managing the National Archives’ collection and its storage environment in the Australian Capital Territory. The section is also responsible for facilitating the transfer of analogue and digital (including born-digital) Commonwealth records into custody, managing the ACT-based storage facilities, coordinating national record movements, overseeing lending services for internal and external stakeholders, applying Machinery of Government changes, and managing national Transfer and Storage strategies, plans, projects, and programs.
The Digitisation Services section provides leadership to the National Archives digitisation function. This includes the National Digitisation Strategy and Annual Plan, digitisation-on-demand service, Agency Digitisation Service, and proactive digitisation including large and small-scale digitisation projects and the commercially operated, Digitisation Hub. It excludes preservation digitisation of audio-visual and photographic formats. The Digitisation Services section is responsible for both in-house and outsourced digitisation in Canberra and providing guidance on digitisation activities to all state and territory offices.
Manager, National Transfer Service
Under limited direction, the main duties of the roles are to:
- Manage a team and its resources in the delivery of transfer activities and projects. Includes monitoring progress and work to ensure targets are met; responding to complex issues and reporting requirements; risk management; and ensuring adherence to the National Archives’ standards and procedures.
- Build team capacity as required through recruitment, coaching, performance feedback and encouraging career development.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide client focussed services, and technical and operational advice with a particular focus of negotiating the transfer of the most significant analogue records into Archives custody.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex information associated with the application and use of Archival principles and Collection Management practice including the description, handling, preservation, transfer, storage, lending, and digitisation of records.
- Work collegiately as part of the Collection Operations management team to contribute to strategic planning of the Collection Management Branch and section workplans, and the development of policy, procedures, guidelines relevant to the management of the national archival collection to achieve internal operational efficiencies.
- Support the digital transformation of the transfers function as undertaken by the section, in alignment with related programs of work within the National Archives.
- Identify and put forward ideas to solve problems. Contribute to and participate in the National Archives’ change agenda and goals to meet Strategy 2030
- Apply the principles of the Australian Public Service Values, Code of Conduct, workplace diversity, work health and safety and participative management within a professional and team environment.

Manager, Transfers Projects

- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide client focussed services, and technical and operational advice with a particular focus on the movement, storage, and lending of Commonwealth records, to achieve section objectives and support organisational outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex information associated with the application and use of Archival principles and Collection Management practice including the description, handling, preservation, transfer, storage, lending, and digitisation of records.
- Work collegiately as part of the Collection Operations management team to contribute to strategic planning of the Collection Management Branch and section workplans, and the development of policy, procedures, guidelines relevant to the management of the national archival collection to achieve internal operational efficiencies.
- Undertake the physical handling, retrieval and return of archival records, ensure that Work, Health and Safety issues are identified, reported and monitored.

Digitisation Services, Digitisation Manager
Under limited direction, the main duties of the role are to:
- Manage a team and its resources to support the delivery of the National Archive’s digitisation program, projects, and services. Includes monitoring progress and work to ensure targets are met; responding to complex issues and reporting requirements; risk and contract management; and ensuring adherence to the National Archives’ standards and procedures.
- Build team capacity as required through recruitment, coaching, performance feedback and encouraging career development.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, to provide client focussed services, and technical and operational advice with a particular focus on the arrangements of the digitisation Commonwealth records, including with contracted suppliers and deliver agreed outcomes within timeframe and budget.
- Demonstrated ability to present complex information associated with the application and use of Archival principles and Collection Management practice including the description, handling, preservation, transfer, storage, lending, and digitisation of records.
- Work collegiately as part of the Digitisation Services management team and contribute to strategic planning of the Collection Management Branch and section workplans, and the development of policy, procedures, guidelines relevant to the management of the national archival collection to achieve internal operational efficiencies.
- Undertake the physical handling, retrieval and return of archival records, ensure that Work, Health and Safety issues are identified, reported, and monitored.

Desirable: possess relevant tertiary qualifications and/or membership or eligibility for membership of relevant professional associations. In the absence of formal qualifications, you may include evidence of skills, knowledge and experience in your application relating to the use of archival principles, or previous, relevant experience gained through a Collection Management related role.
To be eligible for the role you must be an Australian citizen. If you are selected, you will be required to successfully undergo a pre-employment check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a Negative Vetting two (NV2) clearance level.
