The role of Commissioner - Fire and Emergency Services will lead the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) operational arms of Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Services (DPFEM). You will shape the future direction of the TFS and SES arms to ensure that priorities are met as per legislative requirements, alongside operational, strategic and tactical elements of these arms are cohesive in their service delivery.
As a member of the DPFEM agency executive, this position requires a forward thinking, values-based leadership approach. You will bring to this role extensive experience and/or tertiary qualifications in management, emergency management or fire management/technology; alongside experience with volunteer based services.
The position has a high level of autonomy and accountability, and will take ownership to drive development and implementation of overall strategic initiatives, including all reform initiatives. The position is expected to model high level leadership behaviours to other members of the Executive Leadership Team, senior managers and members. The position will be community facing, and your high level interpersonal skills, professionalism and collaborative style, including conflict resolution and negotiation skills will be key to your success in the role.
To be a strong contender for this important appointment, you will need to be an outstanding leader with an impressive record of achievement, preferably gained at a senior level. You will also be an innovative and strategic thinker with a strong outcomes orientation, first class stakeholder management and representational capabilities and the professional and technical skills necessary to ensure that the TFS and SES maintains its reputation for responsiveness and excellence.
Period of Appointment
Fixed Term - Full Time for 5 years from appointment date
Qualifications and Experience
Section 10 (1A) of the Fire Service Act 1979 requires the Chief Fire Officer to be a person who appears to the Governor to have expertise and experience in fire service administration and in the management of fire-fighting operations.
- Extensive experience and/or tertiary qualifications in management, emergency management or fire management/technology.
- Proven experience with volunteer based services.
