The Role
  
As a Communications Officer in the realm of civil construction, you will play a pivotal role in managing and coordinating internal and external communications for construction projects.
  
You will be responsible for ensuring that communication flows smoothly among project stakeholders, including team members, clients, subcontractors, and the wider community.
  
This role requires a blend of strategic planning, excellent interpersonal skills, and a keen understanding of the construction industry.
  
Experience Required

  • Strategic Communication Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies tailored to each construction project, ensuring alignment with overall project goals and objectives.
  • Internal Communication: Facilitate effective communication within the construction team, disseminating project updates, schedules, and safety information. Coordinate meetings, workshops, and training sessions as needed to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • External Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for external stakeholders, including clients, regulatory agencies, media outlets, and the local community. Communicate project milestones, timelines, and any relevant information to external parties in a clear and timely manner.
  • Media Relations: Manage media inquiries and proactively engage with journalists to promote positive coverage of construction projects. Prepare press releases, articles, and other media materials to highlight project achievements and milestones.
  • Community Engagement: Develop and implement community engagement strategies to foster positive relationships with local residents and businesses affected by construction activities. Organize community meetings, open houses, and outreach events to address concerns and gather feedback.
  • Digital Communication: Oversee the construction project's online presence, including website content, social media channels, and email newsletters. Leverage digital platforms to share project updates, showcase progress, and engage with stakeholders.
  • Crisis Communication: Develop contingency plans and protocols for managing communication during emergencies or unexpected events on construction sites. Act as a spokesperson and provide timely updates to stakeholders in accordance with established protocols.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of communication activities, including correspondence, meeting minutes, and media coverage. Prepare regular reports summarising key communication metrics and outcomes for project stakeholders.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a communications role within the construction industry or a similar field.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, website content management systems, and email marketing software.
  • Knowledge of crisis communication principles and experience managing communication during emergencies or sensitive situations.
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
  • A proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in communication strategies and practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills to maintain a high level of communication with all stakeholders to ensure that everyone is up to date on project status.

The client office is based in Inner Melbourne CBD, but you will be based at the client office also in the CBD.
