Macular Disease Foundation Australia is the only national charity representing the interests of the 1.9 million Australians living with macular disease – the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness in Australia.
MDFA works with the community and the health system to promote early detection, reduce progressive vision loss and to save sight. They rely on the support and generosity of the Australian community to fund their four pillars of work: prevention and early detection, support and services, advocacy, and research.
MDFA provide a range of free resources to help people live optimally with macular disease, their advocacy work amplifies the voice of their community, and they invest in vital research that works towards better management, treatments, and cures.
The impact you will have in this role
The Communications Manager will plan and implement all marketing and communications activity at MDFA. In this fast paced and exciting role, you will utilise your strong project management skills and support the organisations varying communication needs.
With high levels of creativity and as an expert writer, you will lead on the development of a range of communication tools such as the website, newsletters, publications, media documents, social media, and the annual report.
With the ability to develop content strategies for traditional, online, and social platforms, you will have a background in writing and creating a broad range of content and will be passionate about utilising your skills to support an organisation having such an impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver the annual communications schedule and workflow for all communications including publications, digital, and campaign focused material
- Produce and manage the production of key health publications including writing the annual report and newsletters
- Work with medical committee members to ensure that all health communication utilises correct language and is appropriate and approved
- Develop organic and paid content for social media and digital platforms
- Oversight of media management at MDFA; identify opportunities to engage with the media and lead on publicity strategies to promote the pillars of work and the organisational goals
- Management of the website including content creation that attracts, engages and inspires audiences
- Creation of paid and organic search programs
- Manage external agencies and utilise external communication support when required
- Line management of the digital coordinator, providing a supportive and collaborative leadership style
- A communications or journalism background with extensive experience in writing and developing content across multiple platforms; traditional, online and social
- The highest level of written ability with a creative and engaging style
- The ability to translate traditional marketing into digital and online forms of communication
- Website management experience with a proven background in designing and delivering content that is informative and engaging
- Social media experience with an understanding of scheduling across multiple platforms
- Proficient in Google Analytics, Marketing Automation tools (Mailchimp, Campaign Monitors)
- Experience of both SEO and SEM
- Experience of running end to end marketing campaigns and reporting back on success
- High levels of project management skills with a background in managing multiple priorities, projects, and communication plans
- Ability to work effectively as part of a small team, with a collaborative approach to work
- A nurturing and supportive approach to people management
