About MA

The Humanitarian Settlement Program’s (HSP) primary purpose is to provide welcome, safety and security to clients under the program while ensuring they are linked with essential services and appropriate housing options to ensure a smooth transition to life in Australia.

Multicultural Australia has recently created new teams and ways of working which will provide for more tailored and client led services across our leading program for humanitarian settlement.   As part of this new way of working, we have openings for Connection & Belonging Coordinators within our experienced and supportive team. 

The Connection Coordinators position plays a vital role in fostering a sense of community, inclusion, and belonging among clients within the 7 – 18 month post arrival period. This position focuses on creating opportunities for clients to connect, build support networks, and integrate into their new community helping clients feel welcomed, empowered, independent and connected to their new environment. Most importantly our goal is to exit clients from the program who feel a sense of belonging to their new home.

We’re looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals who want to be part of a caring and supportive team delivering important work with our clients. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop and implement culturally competent support services and programs that promote social interaction, networking and relationship building with placed based communities and communities of identity for individuals from diverse refugee and humanitarian backgrounds from 7-18 months post arrival.
  • Providing monthly LifeSkills information and orientation group sessions to clients and communities to assist with settling into their new community.
  • Help to develop, promote and facilitate group events aligned to client needs and interests. 
  • Implement identified interventions from such as linking clients to services, facilitating appointment attendance, supporting clients to attend social and connection activities.
  • Provide direction, support, supervision and guidance to Connection Support Workers 
  • Refer clients with complex needs to the Specialist and Intensive Support Team for specialised assistance where necessary.
  • Provide culturally sensitive emotional support to clients, recognising the impact of past trauma and acculturation challenges.
  • Respond promptly to crises and incidents, offering appropriate support to clients.
  • Ensure all case notes, administration and documentation is completed to provide for quality service to clients and to  meet contractual obligations.  
  • Take a collaborative, flexible and client focused approach to your work including flexibility to support out of hours emergency on call roster. 

What qualifications and skills do I need?

Qualifications, licences and probity

  1. Demonstrated minimum attainment of a Diploma of Community Services (Case Management). Other relevant qualifications (including overseas qualifications) or experience may be recognised and a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field would be highly regarded.;
  2. Valid Queensland Driver’s License;
  3. Possession of, or willingness and eligibility to obtain a Blue Card Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000 and the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Regulation 2020, and
  4. National Police Clearance Check.

Essential Skills / Experience 

  1. Proven psychosocial assessment and case management skills and the ability to design and implement culturally appropriate case coordination plans to enhance the settlement process within a team environment, as well as with housing providers and relevant government/community agencies and other external service providers;
  2. An excellent understanding and knowledge of issues, current practice and policies in relation to the support of asylum seekers and refugees as well children and young people living in out of home care arrangements and living in kinship care arrangements;

Desirable Skills / Experience

  1. Experience supervising or line managing a team of staff;
  2. Accredited in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention; and

Successful candidate will be required to have a valid driver’s licence, police check and apply for a Working with Children Blue Card.
