Overview of this role:
Student Academic and Peer Support Services offers a range of programs and services including Peer Support Programs designed to support student learning and the student experience. Student Peer Support Services also leads the University’s overarching Students Helping Students (SHS) strategy, which involves supporting the ongoing development of student mentoring capabilities and mentee learning experiences and assisting Students Helping Students (SHS) program coordinators and affiliated staff from across the University.
The Coordinator Peer Support Programs (SHS) provides pedagogical and practical advice, and assists faculties, services and portfolios to establish, enhance and sustain effective student peer mentoring programs in both cloud and blended environments designed to directly impact student success, engagement, transition and retention at Deakin. Working collaboratively with others involved in the SHS Community of Practice, the role is responsible for leading projects such as the SHS Awards, that are designed to enhance the ongoing development of peer learning at Deakin and beyond, and of leadership initiatives such as the Hallmarks. Informed by the SHS Mentoring Capability Framework and the SHS Practice Framework, the incumbent creates content, facilitates, and coordinates foundation training, a suite of masterclasses as well as recruitment and development opportunities for mentors and staff.
As a Coordinator, Peer Support Programs, you will:
- Seek to continuously improve and apply critical learnings when developing resources, and provide training, advice and support to students and staff relating to peer learning, engagement, and study success, with a particular focus on online resources.
- Build new and productive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders by providing advice on Peer Support Programs and resources to stakeholders to encourage collaboration across the Students Helping Students community, and influence the uptake of programs and services
- Distil the core issues from complex Peer Support and transition information and programs, draw accurate conclusions and condense complex information and next steps into simple concise terms that others can understand
- Communicate and advise students with confidence using examples and the most appropriate influencing technique for a given situation to increase understanding and support
- Seek feedback on improvement opportunities for Peer Support Programs, processes and practice from a diverse range of SHS Community of Practice members, implement change through appropriate channels, and overcome obstacles to change
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Degree with at least 4 years subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and management expertise in technical or administrative fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training in Peer Support in a tertiary institution
- Experience in the development and provision of online learning resources and use of online learning platforms
- A good understanding of pedagogy related to communities of practice and social learning theory
