About the role:
Goulburn Valley Centre Against Sexual Assault (GVCASA) is one of seventeen sexual assault support services that operate throughout Victoria. Together we work to ensure that people of all genders who are Victim Survivors of sexual assault have access to comprehensive and timely support and interventions to address their needs. GVCASA provides a range of services including counselling, group work, advocacy, secondary consultation, training for other professionals and community education. GVCASA’s main office is located in Shepparton and the Centre also provides outreach services throughout the Goulburn (West Hume) Region
The Counsellor Advocate (Children and Young People) at Goulburn Valley Centre Against Sexual Assault (GVCASA) works within a Trauma Informed practice framework and will provide innovative therapeutic services and advocacy support for children and young people, who have been impacted by sexual assault, their non-offending family members and significant other people. The therapeutic services include a range of interventions that seek to address the impact of developmental trauma on the child’s emotional, psychological, behavioural and social functioning, and support and resource key relationships and systems around the child to support the healing process for children and young people who have been impacted by sexual assault.
The successful candidate will have:
- A tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Counselling, Occupational Therapy, Play Therapy, or other relevant profession. Nurses must have a postgraduate qualification or equivalent in mental health.
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as required and/or membership or eligibility for membership with relevant professional body e.g. AASW or APA
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience in provision of counselling and therapeutic services working with children and young people who have experienced sexual assault/trauma.
- Demonstrated capacity to provide therapeutic counselling and support to children, young people and families using a variety of client focused, Trauma Informed modalities that support healing from trauma.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary evidence-based approaches to provision of therapeutic services to children and young people who have been impacted by sexual assault/trauma, including principles of Trauma Informed practice, including the impact of trauma on cognitive and emotional development; and the ability to relate this understanding to the CASA service delivery model and philosophy.
