Company Description -Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.
Job Description -Anglo American are seeking a Specialist in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title. The purpose of this role is to manage all Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title matters for Anglo American’s Australian operations in alignment with Anglo American’s corporate policies, including the Indigenous Peoples Policy, the Social Way, and Sustainable Mine Plan, as well as relevant regulatory requirements, management plans and agreements.
Reporting to the Tenure and Compliance Manager, you will be responsible for managing the successful implementation of the Anglo American’s Cultural Heritage and Native Title agreements and providing oversight and reporting functions to meet legislative obligations. The role provides specialist and strategic advice to the business regarding Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title policy, processes and statutory requirements.
You will have demonstrated experience in the coordination and development of strong relationships with Traditional Owners including the ability to provide timely and constructive high level advice to site teams in relation to Cultural Heritage management and awareness.
You will possess the ability to interact effectively with a range of stakeholders whilst building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, specialist consultants and government departments.
Key accountabilities:
Provide recommendations for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title management as business requirements and internal/external stakeholder expectations evolve
Advise site-based teams on the implementation of Cultural Heritage Management Plans/Agreements
Liaise with Traditional Owner groups in conjunction with relevant Anglo American stakeholders
Lead, in conjunction with relevant Anglo American stakeholders, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage and Native Title agreement negotiations
Coordinate Aboriginal Cultural Heritage surveys / clearances etc (in conjunction with sites)
Monitor and support, in conjunction with relevant Anglo American stakeholders, Cultural Heritage Management Plan/Agreement review requirements
Advise and provide support to sites in respect of implementation of Native Title agreements
Advise on land and resource tenure application and renewal requirements with respect to Native Title
Advise on and provide support to sites with respect to Native Title claims and/or compensation matters
Work closely with the Anglo American’s Social Performance team including in the development and implementation of our Reconciliation Action Plans
Qualifications
-Broad understanding of relevant State and Commonwealth regulatory environments and Coal Mining practices is required
Significant experience in Cultural Heritage and Native Title matters
Demonstrated knowledge of Cultural Heritage and Native Title legislation.
Tertiary level qualifications in a related field or extensive and relevant work experience
Experience in the mining industry/heavy industry within Queensland is desirable but not mandatory
