The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) was officially formed in 1960 but has grown steadily from being a sole aeromedical service to now providing a professional and dedicated team who deliver a holistic health care service across most of the local government municipalities in Tasmania.
We work in partnership with general practitioners, allied health professionals and local service providers to deliver physical health and mental health programs, as well as an award-winning outreach dental program. Our vision is to improve the health outcomes for all Tasmanians with a specific focus on remote and rural areas.
We are one of six RFDS operating sections (Central Operations, QLD section, South Eastern section, Victorian section, Western Operations and Tasmania section) which make up RFDS Australia. About the role
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Dental Assistant to join our growing team at the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). The position forms part of our community based mobile dental team.
This mobile service is a vital link to bringing high-quality oral health care to our diverse, rural, and remote population groups across the North-West, North, and East Coast regions and island communities of Tasmania.
This is a full-time position, however part time will be considered. The position is based in Launceston.
The Duties
- Provide clinical chairside assistance to Dentists and/or Dental Therapists
- Preparation, maintenance and management of dental facility including preparation of instruments and materials
- Maintain strict infection control standards
- Undertake general administration duties including but not limited to: duties related to client care – recording examinations, arranging dental appointments and assisting with enquiries
- Assisting the Dental operator in the provision of dental education and promotion sessions
- Liaise with suppliers, professional bodies and community groups
- Record and order supplies as needed
- Manage communications between community groups and clients/patients
- Work with community members such as schools, aged care and Councils to identify, and respond to improve dental care services
- Assist with overseeing and mentoring junior trainee Dental Assistants

Travel
This role will require weekly travel to rural communities.

What you will need – Selection Criteria
- Certificate III in Dental Assisting (or higher)
- Previous experience in a community based dental structure
- Demonstrated skills and knowledge of the clinical procedures associated with working as a Dental Assistant
- A strong work ethic and genuine enthusiasm to achieve a quality service and the best outcomes for our clients
- Ability to communicate and present information in a clear and concise way
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and the ability to receive and deliver constructive feedback
- Proven ability to work well and contribute effectively in a close team environment
- Reliable, with high integrity and a strong work ethic
- Ability to travel to various locations
Compliance
- Current Tasmanian Drivers Licence
- Working with Vulnerable People Card
- Current National Police Check
- Visa to work in Australia
- Current Vaccinations
