  • Up to $15,900 in salary packaging and hybrid WFH & office model
About the role:
We are seeking applications from those who are interested in a career at Victoria Legal Aid and who want to contribute to improving the lives of disadvantaged Victorians in the role of Deputy Managing Lawyer (DML).
In this position you will work with the Regional Manager to deliver day-to-day operational management and legal supervision to a dedicated team of Lawyers, primarily in Criminal, Family Violence, Family, Civil Law and/or Children's Court matters.
Based at our Ballarat office, you will mentor staff and assist in the development and training of lawyers within the team. While people management is the primary focus of the Deputy Managing Lawyer role, you will also provide high quality legal services in more complex matters.
Regional experience – How far is it to Ballarat?
If you were interested in gaining regional experience, this is a great opportunity to help lead our service delivery and have exposure to working in a regional community.
Ballarat is only 1hr 15-30 mins drive from Melbourne and Bendigo, or 1hr 15mins drive from Geelong. Many of our staff do not live in Ballarat and commute. We have people who live in the West or Inner West of Melbourne and with our flexible hybrid working arrangements, it makes a commute a lot more manageable.
About you:
This role requires someone who is/has:
  • An experienced Lawyer with an interest in people management and the ability to provide effective leadership, mentoring and support to members of your team.
  • Substantial knowledge and/or practical experience in complex criminal, family or civil law matters and relevant court procedures.
  • High level interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, engage and communicate effectively and respectfully with a wide range of clients and stakeholders.
  • A commitment to working collaboratively with others and fostering a cooperative and supportive team environment.
