This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 

John Curtin College of the Arts is seeking to appoint a proactive, strategic, and innovative leader to assist the principal in the functioning of college operations.

The Deputy Principal is responsible to the principal for leadership of the college’s systems and strategies including policies and processes, operations and working closely with Manager of Business Operations with resource and funding allocations.

The successful applicant will ideally possess a strong understanding in school timetabling, staffing and human resources to cater for the complexities of gifted and talented education. A value and understanding of Arts education is vital to cater for characteristics and needs of Arts education and pedagogies for Creativity when navigating and leading school operations at the college.

A proven background in Department of Education policy and procedures and the ability to contextualise for the John Curtin of The Arts context is highly desirable.

You will ideally be a collaborative leader whose exemplary interpersonal and communication skills enable you to build positive relationships with students, staff and the community. As a self-driven leader, capable of working independently, you will act and make decisions on behalf of the principal that will impact aspects of college operations.

Our college, is located on Wadjuk Boodjar in Walyalup (Fremantle) and caters for 1750 students from Years 7 to 12 who come to us through the seven Gifted and Talented programs run by the college for children identified as gifted in the creative domain, including; Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music, Music Theatre and Visual Arts, as well as through a small local catchment zone or participation in our Soccer Excellence Program, making the college a unique learning environment.

As a unique learning environment, we embrace the individual differences of our students, and all staff must hold or develop understanding of gifted learners and learning difference. John Curtin has an established Reconciliation Action Plan and cultural responsiveness is valued in all staff.

Engagement in creativity and the Arts is as a vehicle for student engagement and motivation at the college. The Arts at John Curtin is as much about providing dynamic opportunities for all students (each year we produce over 100 performances/exhibitions) as it is about developing transferable life skills such as empathy, creative and critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to communicate, all important attributes for any future pathway. Staff at the college enjoy the opportunity to attend performances throughout the year.

John Curtin is proud to be a Quality Teaching Strategy Lead School and works to implement evidence-based best practice teaching in line with Teaching for Impact. This provides opportunities for our staff to engage in professional development as well as providing opportunities to work with staff from other Department of Education schools to support quality teaching more broadly across the state.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
