This is a twenty (20) month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 with possible extension  

Southern Cross District High School (DHS) is seeking a vibrant, innovative, and relational leader who will ideally possess a positive approach to learning and encourage it in others.

Teachers and school administrators employed at Southern Cross District High School in 2024 are eligible to receive an Attraction and Retention Incentive of $17,000 (pa, gross – to be adjusted pro rata for FTE and tenure).  Eligible staff will receive a percentage of this payment on commencement at the school, with the remainder paid at the end of the school year.  Staff must remain employed in the location until the end of the school year to be eligible to receive the second payment.  

The ARI payment is in addition to other incentives that may apply in this school. 

The successful applicant will work with the Principal to provide curriculum and instructional leadership within the context of the School’s Strategic and Operational Plans, ensuring curriculum is relevant, rigorous, and inclusive of all students. Southern Cross DHS is proud to be a Quality Teaching Strategy Initiative School and works to implement evidence-based best practice teaching in line with Teaching for Impact. Experience in case management processes and personalised learning, to support students ‘At Educational Risk’ is highly regarded. The ideal applicant will work in collaboration with key stakeholders to develop and maintain a learning environment that is safe, inclusive, rigorous, and addresses the key learning needs of students academically, socially, and emotionally.

You should be highly motivated, reflective, and enthusiastic and will ideally have previous successful leadership experience within your current role. We are looking for applicants who possess excellent organisation skills, as well as highly developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to pay attention to detail and work cooperatively and efficiently in a team environment. Other ideal qualities would include a positive attitude and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change and exhibit initiative, as well as actively supporting a strong culture of collegiality, integrity and high expectations.

Southern Cross DHS, located in the Eastern Wheatbelt, provides contemporary education for around 60 students from Kindergarten to Year 10. Our small student population enables us to offer a personalised learning environment, whilst also providing a breadth of curriculum, teacher expertise and resourcing. Foremost, our school aims to empower students with the values, skills and knowledge essential in becoming valued members of their local community and beyond. We have forged strong links with our local community, including the local mining and agriculture industry, through partnerships with the local Shire, businesses, mining companies, sporting organisations and neighbouring schools. These partnerships are strengthened through our staff, many of whom play an active role in the broader community.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Eligibility and training requirements

 Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement; and
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
