PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Design, implement and evaluate training and development strategies and activities with Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania (NHT) members towards improving skills and knowledge in community development practice, governance and community engagement.
The role is part of a small, dynamic team, providing peak body functions to a Network of 35 Neighbourhood Houses across the state. The team works collaboratively for social justice using a community development approach towards our vision for thriving Tasmanian communities.

Commencing as soon as possible 2024 – 30 June 2026
Contract position - Full or part-time to be negotiated.
Neighbourhood Houses Tasmania
NHT is the peak body for the network of 35 Neighbourhood Houses located across the state. We provide:
- Information sharing with sector and community
- Sector consultation and co-ordination
- Advocacy and representation to government and other decision makers
- Resource, training, development and capacity building towards good practices and functioning of organisations
- Policy development and advice to the sector and government
The position requires:
- Working in accordance with the values and purpose of NHT
- Adhering to the policies and procedures of NHT
- Contributing to team projects, processes, staff meetings and staff development opportunities as offered by NHT.
Pay and conditions
The terms and conditions are those applying under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services (SCHCADS) Industry Award 2010.
The position is classified at Level 5 Pay Point 1-3 depending on experience.
Superannuation will be paid at the mandated rate to the fund of choice.
Supervision
The position will work under the general supervision of the Chief Executive Officer.
DUTIES
- Support the development of the Neighbourhood House Network’s capacity and capability in the key areas such as place-based community development, leadership, governance and partnerships.
- Lead in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the training calendar.
- Participate in the planning and delivery of projects, member events, the annual state conference and other events as required.
- Undertake collaborative partnerships with members and other stakeholders to support place-based ways of working across the state.
- Participate in meeting compliance requirements under legislation and funding agreements.
- In collaboration with the CEO and NHT team respond promptly and effectively to enquiries, including those from Neighbourhood House staff, volunteers and boards on relevant issues.
- Represent NHT at relevant meetings and forums.
- All other duties, that contribute to the broader purpose of NHT as a peak body relevant to the position, as directed by the CEO.

Working environment
The position will be located at the NHT Office, 16b Elmsleigh Road, Derwent Park.
Travel within Tasmania is required, with some overnight trips.
SELECTION CRITERIA
To be considered for this role you must address the selection criteria below. Please note no more than 4 pages in total.
The successful applicant will have:
Essential
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or commensurate experience in community project and development work.
- A commitment to social justice, place-based and community development principles, and to providing peak body support to Neighbourhood Houses in Tasmania.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively engage, consult and communicate, both verbally and in writing with a range of stakeholders.
- Strong project management and evaluation skills and the ability to apply these to tight timeframes and a rapidly changing environment.
- Demonstrated high level computer skills, particularly in the use of the Microsoft Office suite.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in fostering a learning and development culture and building positive working relationships with communities, Neighbourhood House staff and other key stakeholders.
- The capacity to work effectively both autonomously and in a team.
- National Police Check and Working with Vulnerable People Card.
Desirable
- Possession of a valid, open driver’s licence.
- Demonstrated experience in social policy research, interpretation, and analysis.
