The Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge (TCWR) is a not-for-profit, specialist non-government organisation committed to assisting and enabling women and children experiencing domestic and family violence in Tennant Creek and the Barkly to be safe, recover and thrive.
The Tennant Creek Women’s Refuge was incorporated on 26 April 1989 and continues to provide the necessary services and supports 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day to meet its vision: that all women and children in the Barkly Region live free from domestic and family violence and its consequences.
Reporting to the Services Coordinator, you will be a key member of TCWR’s staffing complement and provide effective, high quality, culturally sensitive counselling and therapy, including education programs to individuals, families and groups. You will be able to effectively communicate your expertise in the areas of the position responsibilities within a sensitive and complex human services environment.
Referrals to the service can be made from the critical outreach team, women may self-refer, or referrals may come from external agencies including NT Police. The outreach service provides support and casework for clients who are not accessing (or who may be unable to access) critical community-based supports as well as those clients who have exited the 24/7 crisis accommodation service. You will be responsible for providing trauma-informed, culturally appropriate counselling to clients of the service and developing and delivering community education programs that provide information and promote the prevention of domestic and family violence (DFV). You will be required to obtain and maintain registration/membership with the appropriate professional body.
You will need to be able to respond to a diverse range of issues, including grief and loss, violence and abuse, parenting concerns, stress and anxiety, and separation, all of which (or a combination of) may be associated and/or impacted by inter-generational trauma experienced by the stolen generation.
Your aim as DFV Counsellor & Community Educator is to empower clients, allow them time to make decisions and listen to their needs, focus on their strengths and work with them to overcome difficulties and barriers in a respectful way. As a first point contact for women and children entering TCWR’s programs, you will strive to operate within a non-judgmental and culturally responsive environment where you will ensure:
- active responsibility for dealing with domestic, family or sexual violence within a risk assessment framework pertaining to the safety of women and children, more specifically the NT Government’s Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Reduction Framework 2018-2028;
- the priority of high-risk clients;
- positive contribution to a safe and supportive working environment without exception;
- clear communication (both verbal and written) undertaken within a sensitive and complex human service environment;
- a teamwork approach to service delivery with strong leadership and outstanding capabilities to negotiate with and influence stakeholders;
- compliance with requisite business systems including effective procedures, practices and associated internal control systems;
- consistent attendance and participation in team meetings.
