Job description

Director, Regional Operations

Executive Band 1

NSW Ambulance

Are you interested in making a difference?

An exciting opportunity is available for a dynamic individual to join NSW Ambulance in a key strategic role to lead and measure service delivery, by setting performance standards and measures that determine operational priorities and are aligned with organisational objectives to optimise outcomes for patients.

If you are a skilled executive operating at a strategic level, proven in driving growth and affecting change – apply now

This role will be located in State Headquarters, Rozelle, with relocation to the State Operations Centre, Sydney Olympic Park in 2024.

Why You Should Apply:

NSW Ambulance is one of the largest and most modern ambulance services in the world and is recognised as a global leader in its field.  It is a division of NSW Health and provides emergency and non-emergency clinical care, retrieval and specialist patient transport services to a population of over 7 million, delivered by its 4,500 staff through 250 locations across metropolitan and regional NSW. Through its fleet of 1,500 road-based vehicles, helicopter operations, fixed wing aircraft, off-road vehicles, snowmobiles and other bespoke rescue options, NSW Ambulance provides comprehensive rapid response services across a diverse range of scenarios and geographical locations.  It is a highly complex, geographically distributed organisation with significant multi-stakeholder involvement across its operations, both centrally and locally. The workforce is highly committed, valued and respected and underpins the success of the organisation.

NSW Clinical Operations are split across 8 sectors covering metropolitan and regional NSW and are responsible for the delivery of front-line mobile emergency care, medical retrieval and health related transport. The Director Regional Operations reports to the Executive Director Clinical Operations, is responsible for a budget of $200m and leads a direct team of 4 and a much larger indirect team. In this role, you will:

  • Lead and manage all aspects of Regional Operations, ensuring the highest level of service delivery and clinical standards are achieved, whilst continually enhancing patient experience;
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership, determine operational priorities and performance standards and ensure alignment to overall organisational objectives;
  • Ensure that all levels of regional ambulance operations have the capacity, capability and structure to respond to emergency and non-emergency requests within agreed performance metrics and budget;
  • Manage key IR stakeholders and build collaborative and productive relationships;
  • Develop long term strategies and programs to improve the operational efficiency of Regional Operations, in partnership with the wider NSW Ambulance team, through the adoption of global best practice methodologies;
  • Build strong relationships across a variety of key stakeholders including other statewide, national and international emergency services, NSW Ministry of Health, local health districts and other associated agencies;
  • Foster a responsive, future focused and contemporary culture which supports staff to deliver true excellence in patient care.

To succeed in this role, you’ll be a contemporary operations leader with significant executive experience managing large, multi-site operations which have a critical customer or patient focus.  This experience may have been gained within the public or private sector, however operational leadership experience within emergency management (fire, police or ambulance) or a clinical setting, whilst not essential, would be preferable.  You’ll be an outstanding communicator able to lead, motivate and inspire your team to be the very best, within a highly challenging and demanding environment.  You’ll possess excellent stakeholder skills and a natural ability to influence and engage at all levels.

Role Outline

The Director Regional Operations directs high quality services to achieve business performance outcomes, optimum levels of service delivery, standards and compliance requirements with a focus on enhancing patient experience consistent with the organisation's vision, values and objectives.

Take the focus capabilities from the role description and use the Capability Application Tool to access practice interview questions.

Applying for this Role

You are required to submit a one page covering letter, including a short statement in response to the two targeted questions below:

  1. Give a recent example of when you have managed a large and diverse operational team, with a strong focus on service delivery, within a clinical or emergency management governance and performance framework, which included maintaining quality assurance.
  2.  Describe a time when you have managed complex stakeholders and industrial relations issues across a large geographical area, resulting in a positive outcome for all parties.

Essential Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications and/or extensive experience as part of a senior/executive management team in a substantial and complex service delivery organisation

We know the value of diverse experiences and broad capabilities.  Even if you’re not sure if you meet all the role requirements, we’d love to hear from you.

This is an ongoing, fulltime, Band 1, Health Service senior executive role. An attractive remuneration package within the range of $225,740 - $249,843 per annum, will be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Please contact David Dutton, Executive Director Clinical Operations, NSW Ambulance on 9779 3848 should you have any additional questions about the role.
