Our Melbourne office focuses on commercial operations, ensuring the delivery of our innovative products to the Australian market. We're inviting international professionals to join us in our mission of delivering the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines.

This exciting opportunity will establish and lead the R&D collaboration strategy and plans to increase Moderna’s footprint in the life science ecosystem in Australia and establish partnerships to continue advancing scientific discoveries. This role will be responsible for developing a concrete vision, strong oversight, and delivering the R&D strategies in Australia. They will play a key role in identifying areas of opportunity for investment across areas such as research collaborations, joint ventures, technology licensing, and industry development programs. They will build partnerships with experts and key stakeholders; they will also develop timelines, establish governance, lead certain project teams, support the functions in planning, driving execution and manage risk, allocate budgets and resources appropriately, and coordinate interdependencies across all functions. With a deep knowledge of Australia’s R&D environment, this individual will connect Moderna’s Global R&D organization with the best science in Australia and work across the ecosystem and various stakeholders in alignment with Moderna’s priorities and Australia’s life science strategy. Building on the successful establishment of the Regional Research Centre in Australia, the individual is expected to lead and expand the RRC presence across Australia as well as to build connections across the region, identifying where partnerships add value to Moderna regional teams (including Singapore, Japan, Korea, China). The role will report to the Sr. Director, Global R&D Strategic Operations, and sit on the local Leadership team for Australia.

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive R&D strategic plan that aligns with Moderna's global strategy and addresses the Australian market's specific needs.

  • Map and analyze the Australian R&D ecosystem, identifying key areas for engagement, investment, and potential collaboration in mRNA and related therapeutic areas.

  • Establish and nurture strategic relationships with government, industry, academic, and international stakeholders to advance Moderna's R&D objectives.

  • Identify, evaluate, and pursue R&D opportunities for partnerships that enhance Moderna's scientific and market position, developing business cases for internal review.

  • Coordinate cross-functional project plans, ensuring clarity on deliverables, timelines, and leveraging opportunities for synergy.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Serve as the primary R&D contact for Australian stakeholders, managing university relations and business development initiatives.

  • Manage an Associate Director of R&D Partnerships who will oversee the execution and performance of R&D projects, ensuring they align with investment plans and address any arising issues or risks.

  • Represent Moderna at scientific speaking engagements and maintain a strong presence in the Australian life science ecosystem.

  • Lead and manage multiple complex projects, ensuring effective workflow, risk management, and adherence to deadlines while fostering a collaborative internal and external environment.

  • Pursue options in parallel: Strategically evaluate and pursue multiple R&D opportunities simultaneously to identify the best collaborations and partnerships for advancing scientific discoveries in Australia.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:

  • Holds a PhD, MD, or PharmD in a relevant scientific discipline, coupled with significant experience in a commercial, academic, or government setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and unite complex stakeholder groups, developing and managing significant R&D partnerships.

  • Extensive global R&D network in global health and infectious diseases, across industry, NGOs, and government sectors.

  • Proven track record in strategy consulting, with experience delivering major innovative projects in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong problem-solving and risk management skills, with the ability to address complex and sensitive issues.

  • Experience in leading cross-functional programs and managing multiple, complex projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of building rapport and managing collaborative relationships across various backgrounds and organizational levels, embodying Moderna's values of boldness, curiosity, collaboration, and relentlessness
