About the team
The role of Safety and Health is to develop, advise on and manage the implementation of the University's Work Health and Safety Program. Safety and Health provides a consultancy service to The University of Western Australia's community, thereby ensuring the provision and maintenance of the highest possible standards of health and safety for all employees, students, contractors, visitors and volunteers.
About the opportunity
As the individual reporting to the Technical Specialist (Diving and Boating), your role involves actively participating in UWA Diving and Boating operations alongside researchers. You may occasionally take on the responsibility of skippering a surveyed research vessel. Additionally, you will serve as a Dive Supervisor or diver in Scientific dive field operations within the state. Your responsibilities extend to assisting, assessing, and providing reviews, guidance, and approvals for fieldwork planning.
Your role requires you to assess competencies and report on boating and scientific diving activities conducted by the University, including snorkelling. Involvement in diver and Boating training programs is part of your responsibilities. You are tasked with ensuring that University boating and scientific diving activities align with UWA Diving and Boating procedures, guidelines, and state WHS or federal regulations. Moreover, you play a role in the maintenance of UWA's boats and safety equipment to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards.
About you
To succeed in this role, you should possess professional/occupational diving qualifications such as a Dive Instructor or ADAS, a Coxswains Grade 1 (or higher) Certificate of Competency and a current 'C' Class driver's license.
You will also maintain current first aid and oxygen provider certification, along with a certificate of medical fitness to AS/NZS 2299.1. In addition, you will be prepared to meet the physical requirements of the position by passing a fitness assessment.
While having a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is desirable, those with relevant tertiary or VET training in marine studies are encouraged to apply.
