Yarralinka Primary School (PS) are seeking to establish a pool of Education Assistant - Special Needs for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during for appointments for the 2024 year, up to the end of Term 1, 2025. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2024 school year.

You will ideally have a ‘can do’ attitude and the ability to anticipate and adapt to change; showing initiative, flexibility and creative problem solving to produce the best opportunities for students.

We seek Education Assistants with a passion for working with students who are committed to maximising their impact on student learning. You should have high expectations and truly believe that all children can learn and be successful in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. As a staff member, you will embrace evidence-based strategies in place across the school to meet the needs of students.

  Experience in synthetic phonics, MultiLit/ MiniLit, working with students with learning needs/ disabilities and social and emotional learning will be highly regarded. You value the whole child, acknowledging that academic, social, emotional, creative and physical dimensions are vital. We seek enthusiastic team members who show initiative in adapting tasks to meet student needs. You will contribute advice and expertise, collaborating with staff to support student achievement. Suitable applicants will actively engage in self-reflection.

Under teacher direction, you will assist in the delivery of planned education programs, including the operation of computers and digital technologies; implement individual or small group programs, and provide valuable feedback to support student learning. Ideally, you will be able to support programs relevant to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Intellectual Disability (ID), and/or other Physical Disabilities. An ability to work with students in out-of-class activities, during breaks in the school day, and on school excursions is required.

Suitable applicants should display good organisational skills and the ability to provide feedback on student progress to teaching professionals. You will be responsible for assisting teachers with the supervision of students for all activities and the general health and wellbeing of students, including attending to minor illnesses and/or injuries.

Yarralinka PS is located in the growing suburb of Southern River, surrounded by rapidly developing housing estates. In 2024 Yarralinka PS has expanded to cater from Kindergarten to Year 6. Our school community includes families of different backgrounds and cultures, many from overseas, where English is not the first language or dialect spoken at home.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Good written and oral communication skills, including the ability to interact with students with Special Needs, parents and teaching professionals on the provision of educational programs, and to assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to work as part of a team in the evaluation of educational programs, including special education and therapy programs where these have been implemented.
  • Good organisational skills that will assist in the delivery and development of effective education programs to students and subsequent feedback to teaching professionals or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist teachers or therapists in implementing educational programs, including special education and, should this be a requirement of the position, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Ability to assist with general health and well-being of students.

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment;
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check;
  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment and every three years thereafter;
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
