This is a six (6) month full-time position commencing Term 3, 2024 with possible extension.

Koondoola Primary School (PS) are seeking an enthusiastic Education Assistant – Auslan to join our friendly team.

The role may include providing comprehensive support and resources to students and their families and implementing specialised interventions and targeted strategies. The successful applicant should aim to create an inclusive and supportive environment that maximises students learning potential and overall well-being.

As an Education Assistant - Auslan, you will provide the highest level of access to the curriculum for Deaf students with sign language interpreting and teacher directed tutoring, according to the needs of the students.  The successful applicant will assist the teacher in delivering planned education programs and encouraging a supportive and inclusive learning environment.  The successful applicant may be involved in team situations, work under limited supervision, and may be required to engage in consultation and provide feedback.

The role may require discretion in problem solving, decision making, and choosing methods and processes to achieve educational outcomes that are determined through consultation with the teacher, or other professionals.

The successful applicant will ideally have good written and verbal communication skills, be able to work well as part of a team and have a good understanding of the issues affecting deaf or hard of hearing students. You should have the ability to show initiative in completing tasks combined with strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with students, staff, and families. You will be part of a team of experts that includes the Visiting Teachers of the Deaf and other Auslan.

Koondoola PS is located approximately 17 kilometres from the Perth Central Business District in the City of Wanneroo and has an enrolment of 265 students. Our school is one of the most unique educational environments in Western Australia. It brings together children from a wide range of backgrounds, languages, and cultures.

Add to this the on-site Intensive English Centre and our close relationship with Burbridge School for children with Special Needs and it becomes clear that celebrating inclusivity is a way of life for the Koondoola school community. Over 70% of our students come from a language background other than English making Koondoola one of the most culturally diverse schools in the state, with interpreters and dedicated teachers.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Well developed oral and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with Deaf or Hard of Hearing students, liaise with parents, teachers and community members and where necessary assist teachers in understanding students.
  • Well developed organisational skills, including the ability to contribute to a professional team and deliver an effective education program.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues relevant to deaf or hard of hearing students

Eligibility and training requirements

Employees will be required to:

  • hold a Certificate, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Auslan Interpreting (Paraprofessional/Professional) and/or NAATI Accreditation or have considerable proven experience as an Interpreter
  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy.
  • consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a current Screening Clearance Number issued by the Department of Education’s Screening Unit prior to commencement of employment
  •  obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check
  • complete the Department’s induction program within 3 months of commencement
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within 6 months of appointment
  • complete the Department’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness online course within 3 months of commencement.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
