Job description

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) is seeking Legal Directors/Principal Lawyers to join its Law and Policy Branch (multiple positions). The Law and Policy Branch delivers legal support services within the Tribunal through a number of specialist teams. The Director /Principal Lawyer roles each lead a specialist team of lawyers, and provide strategic advice on complex matters to members and staff of the Tribunal and to the Tribunal’s senior leadership. These services span a range of administrative law jurisdictions, including social security, migration and refugee and the national disability insurance scheme. The Branch also coordinates the Tribunal’s compliance with legal and regulatory requirements (such as freedom of information and privacy), manages corporate legal services and provides litigation support.

We are seeking Principal Lawyers to lead two specialist teams that principally provide support to the Tribunal’s Migration and Refugee Division and to the Social Security and Child Support Division.

The annual salary for this position is from $130,512 to $148,377 plus 15.4% superannuation.

Position Eligibility Requirements:

The AAT requires Australian citizenship as a condition of engagement.

All employees are required to undertake an Australian Federal Police Check and health assessment.

Mandatory:

  • Admission as a legal practitioner, however described, of the Supreme Court of an Australian State or Territory; holder of (or eligible to hold) a current practising certificate.
