Job description

  • Full time (35 hours per week) for up to 6 months, with the view to ongoing employment.
  • $78,034 to $88,756 per annum (depending on skills and experience), including an all-incidence allowance of $7,340 per annum, employer's contribution to superannuation and annual leave loading.
  • Based in Dee Why.

About us

The Wakehurst Electorate Office is the point of contact for all constituents and stakeholders to engage with the Member for Wakehurst regarding state government services, responsibilities and legislation. 

The Dee Why Electorate Office is open 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

About the position

Electorate officers are the initial point of contact for all constituent enquiries. The role involves administration, correspondence, customer service and secretarial functions to support the Member and ensure the efficient operation of the electorate office. This role reports to the Senior Electorate Officer and the Member for Wakehurst.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Liaising with constituents and stakeholders through effective casework management
  • Swift and regular correspondence answering constituent enquiries, as well as keeping community members updated with developments pertaining to their enquiry
  • Assistance organising and triaging high volumes of community correspondence
  • Processing of celebratory cards, certificates and Justice of the Peace application requests
  • Accompanying or sometimes representing the Member for Wakehurst at community events
  • Regularly updating the Member for Wakehurst and the team of key cases and issues in need of attention and advocacy
  • Various office administrative tasks as needed.
  • The applicant must have excellent communication and writing skills and will be required to draft letters and email correspondence, respond to various stakeholders and constituents, answer phone calls, have the ability to manage constituent casework and make representations to NSW Ministers.

The applicant should have exemplary interpersonal skills and a work ethic that aligns with our friendly and hard-working team. They must have outstanding customer service skills, which are vital for dealing with members of the public who are seeking assistance. The applicant should also demonstrate excellent time management to ensure correspondence and casework progresses as swiftly as possible.

The successful applicant will be allocated a selection of key local issue areas for their casework.

The role requires some after hours and weekend work for which an annual All Incidence of Employment Allowance of $7,340 is paid.

Local knowledge and prior experience in a State or Federal electorate office are valued. Additionally, being a Justice of the Peace (or the desire to obtain this status) is a welcome advantage.

Selection criteria

  1. Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to respectfully interact with constituents, liaise with community groups, government and non-government organisations.
  2. Demonstrated superior organisational skills to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to exercise sound judgement, ability to deal with sensitive and confidential issues, while performing at a high standard under limited supervision.
  4. Excellent writing skills including the ability to prepare correspondence, briefing notes, submissions, speeches and newsletters.
    End to end management of events, forums, and community engagement activities.
  5. Good word processing/keyboard/database and computer skills (preferably Microsoft Office)
  6. An interest in, and understanding of, NSW politics and Australian parliamentary procedures and processes.
