YEF’s purpose
The Yarra Energy Foundation (YEF) is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with big ambitions for a zero-carbon future.
Our Vision
Cleaner energy to address a changing climate.
Our Mission
Accelerate the transition to cleaner energy.
YEF’s three strategic goals are to: * Increase energy storage.
  • Support uptake of renewables.
  • Enable electrification.
We enable individuals and communities to cut their energy emissions, and have established a leading position in community energy storage, including launching Victoria’s first inner urban community battery.
YEF plays a unique and trusted role, bringing together private and public partnerships to deliver better energy within our communities.
Project context
YEF has developed a core focus on battery systems and aims to assist community energy groups, councils, and other organisations in the development of plans, feasibility studies, education, project management and operational management of battery systems.
YEF’s Energy & Storage (E&S) business is in high demand, with one community battery system in operation and other projects in development.
YEF’s E&S services include:
  • Delivery and coordination of battery system projects
  • Consulting services for the development of strategies, business cases, funding applications, and deploying assets
  • Education and training of deploying energy and storage systems
Who we’re looking for
We’re after someone who:
  • Has a growth mindset and can be a long-term member of YEF’s core team.
  • Has values aligned with YEF’s vision, mission and organisational goals.
  • Is open-minded, ready to learn, reflect, and ask curious questions.
  • Takes initiative, owns responsibilities, ask questions when unsure, innovates, and brings forward ideas.
  • Can be flexible and is ready to roll up their sleeves when called upon.
  • Is deeply passionate about addressing climate change, reducing emissions, and accelerating the energy transition.
Ideally, you have demonstrated skills in project delivery and stakeholder management, preferably with some experience working/volunteering in and with not-for-profit, sustainability, and/or local government ecosystems.
You need to work well in a small and close-knit team that operates in a flexible co-working culture. You can demonstrate a high level of autonomy and agency, contributing to and benefiting from a friendly, and supportive team environment.
Objectives of this role * Develop and deliver YEF’s E&S services to meet project deadlines and client expectations.
  • Assist YEF in strengthening our lead position, by deepening our expertise, and representing our interests at all relevant events.
  • Actively support collaboration between the E&S team and the broader YEF team to foster innovation through sharing knowledge and connecting ideas and people.
Tasks and responsibilities
The role of the Project Officer is to contribute and support project activities undertaken by the E&S team to successful completion. It will involve taking ownership of project deliverables, group facilitation, and producing client reports. In this role, you would:
  • Work closely with the Program Manager to develop essential knowledge for the delivery of the E&S services.
  • Undertake studies, research, and collaborate with external companies to deliver on projects and strengthen YEF’s expertise in the E&S space.
  • Lead or assist, as may be required, in the delivery of projects and in collaboration with coworkers.
  • Follow major industry developments and research specific topics to develop and sustain the technical and business competence required of the role.
  • Provide technical and business support for enquiries about YEF’s services, including battery and related systems, and community energy initiatives.
  • At times, represent YEF at online and in-person events in both informal and formal events, such as conferences and community meetings.
  • Seize on opportunities in the market to present YEF’s brand and develop our business.
  • Work within a resource limited not-for-profit structure while maintaining a strong commercial focus.
  • Work closely with other YEF team members to ensure that all relevant parties are informed of upcoming opportunities and deliverables.
Organisational relationships
Internal
YEF management and employees
External

Qualifications

  • A degree or higher in an engineering discipline or demonstrated relevant industry experience.
  • A good working knowledge of electrical systems and distribution networks.

  • Some understanding of the evolving energy sector, the National Energy Market (NEM), climate related issues and pathways for sustainable outcomes.
  • Prior experience working with external companies, such as suppliers, consultants, and government agencies.
  • Ability to gather and manipulate market intelligence and sources of data to identify target markets, sectors, and key demographics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, and ability to adapt to different working styles.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

Assignment Instructions

Context
  • Waadoyodoo City Council would like to support the uptake of renewables and will soon ban new residential gas connections.
  • The Council has decided that it wants to have a neighbourhood battery in their council area to support this initiative.
  • There has been positive interest in neighbourhood batteries from several community members and particularly from the North-West district.
  • The growth of solar panels has been steady over the last few years in that district and is relatively high compared to surrounding local government areas.
  • That district is generally quite aware and concerned about climate change, and the uptake of Electric Vehicles has been higher in recent times.
  • CorePower, the electricity distributor, is concerned about increased consumption of electricity in the district from electrification.
  • Waadoyodoo have reached out to you at YEF for guidance to understand their needs and priorities in the transition of their municipal area.
  • YEF’s mission is to accelerate the uptake of cleaner energy, and provides services to support proponents of neighbourhood batteries.
Questions
Please respond within the word limits. Comprehensive responses are not required, rather, communicate what you believe is most important. * The Council has invited you to an initial meeting. Explain the possible solution(s) you have in mind and how you would approach the meeting. (200 words or less)
  • What risks and opportunities do you see for the Council to reduce emissions from energy? (200 words or less)
  • Develop something visual, such as an image, graphic, or map, that you feel represents a possible solution for Waadoyodoo City Council.
