About the role:
The Executive Director, Public Law and Legislation will play a critical leadership role in the Legal Services and Integrity (LSI) Branch. The role oversees the provision of broad legal services to the department, Ministers and Administrative Offices. This includes the delivery of legislation services, including management and oversight of legislative drafting as well as provision of advice on the exercise of statutory powers and Public Law. This role will also lead, develop and provide oversight for the Freedom of Information and Legal Compliance functions under the Manager.

How you'll make a difference:
As an Executive Director within the LSI Branch, you will be required to provide authoritative, clear, timely, practical and specialist legal advice on a broad range of matters relevant to the department's responsibilities. You will lead the delivery of high quality, client focused and cost-effective legal services in relation to highly complex and sensitive matters with the aim of effectively and cooperatively resolving issues and ensuring the department adopts a culture of continual service improvement.
The role requires excellent judgement, a highly attuned risk radar and the ability to deal with sensitive and complex matters with integrity. It requires the ability to get across detailed technical information quickly and make decisions under pressure, as well as strong skills in communication, stakeholder management, negotiation, and practical problem-solving.
As the Executive Director, Public Law and Legislation, you will be required to:
* Manage, mentor and support other solicitors within the LSI branch
* Work independently and lead projects;
* Prepare written advices, briefings and reports;
* Engage and oversee external legal firms;
* Develop and implement continuous improvement to the legal function across the LSI branch;
* Work with external regulators to assist with the department meeting its compliance obligations;
* Support clients and maintain positive relationships by actively working with stakeholders; and
* Work as part of the LSI Executive Team to deliver on the LSI Branch and broader Divisional priorities.
* Effectively identify and report high risk matters or possible system-wide improvements stemming from investigations, claims, inquiries and litigation.
* Represent the department at inter-departmental, industry and sector committees, conferences and meetings in an effective and constructive manner.
