About the Position
The Facility Manager is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the institute's experimental rodent facilities located at the Parkville campus.
The primary focus of this role is to provide excellence in rodent experimental services, with a strong focus on cutting edge experimental work and client outcomes, the cost-effective management of resources, strong leadership of staff, and ensuring compliance with the overarching regulatory environment. The position is required to provide annual budget forecasts and work with other professional services departments to develop costing methodologies and manage the recovery of operational and staffing costs.
This position works closely with veterinarians to implement the institute's Program of Veterinary Care and ensure a commitment to animal health and welfare. They have an important role, as the technical representative, on the Animal Ethics Committee to provide practical advice to the committee regarding the animal work undertaken at the Institute.
Selection Criteria
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Diploma of Animal Technology with a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience managing a multi-faceted facility, or an equivalent combination of relevant knowledge, training and/or experience in the field of Animal Technology.
- Excellent practical skills in all techniques routinely involved with operating a medical research animal facility.
- Outstanding ability to manage a large team of technical staff with varying abilities.
- Outstanding ability to plan for and manage resources in a cost-efficient manner.
- Familiarity with compliance issues surrounding the operation of an animal based medical research facility, particularly those associated with animal ethics.

- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage a large team with various competencies firmly and fairly and proven people management skills.
- Excellent time management and practical problem-solving skills.

- Cognizance of the needs of the scientific community at WEHI and the ability to understand researchers' needs from their perspective.
Terms of Appointment
This position is an ongoing role in a full time capacity. Salary is Professional Services Employee Level 9 ($128,618-$139,222). Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
